The dripping pus and blood also freeze, causing suffering. "Achu" refers to: using a weak voice, uttering vague words, and emitting groans. "Kyi hud" refers to: being even colder than that, unable to utter clear words, only emitting a faint trembling sound. "So tata" refers to: being extremely cold, unable to make a sound, the body trembling, and the teeth chattering. "Cracking like an উৎপལ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal meaning: Utpala) flower" refers to: being even colder, the force of the cold wind turning the skin blue and cracking into five or six petals. "Cracking like a lotus" refers to: being even more extreme than blue, turning grayish-red and cracking into ten petals or more. "Cracking greatly like a lotus" refers to: the cold reaching its extreme, the skin peeling off, turning bright red, and cracking into a hundred or a thousand petals, etc., making the suffering unbearable. The difference in lifespan is: as stated in the Abhidharmakosha: "A hundred years pass in a sesame heap, one sesame seed taken out is exhausted, such is the lifespan of the Blister Hell, the lifespan of the others is twenty times that." This means that a container that can hold eighty khals (units of measurement) of Magadha sesame is filled with sesame, and one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years until all the sesame is taken out. This is said to be the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespans of the lower hells are calculated by increasing by a factor of twenty. Third, contemplate the suffering of the surrounding hells. The Abhidharmakosha says: "All eight have sixteen additions, each of their four sides has, a fire pit without a shore, stinking rotten mud, a path of sharp blades, and rivers, etc." This means that each of the four directions of each of the eight hot hells has four fire pits, etc., so there are sixteen in total. Whether emerging from the hot hell itself or being born there, no matter which direction one flees, one will fall into a fire pit without a shore that is knee-deep. As soon as the foot is placed, all the flesh and blood are burned, and when lifted, it is restored. Escaping from there, one will fall into a stinking rotten mud swamp, and worms with sharp, needle-like mouths will drill into the flesh, skin, and bones to eat. Escaping from there, one will reach a path filled with sharp blades, and as soon as the foot is placed, it is cut into pieces, and when lifted, it is restored. And so on, including: escaping from there, one will enter a forest of sword leaves. There, when sitting in the shade, the karma wind blows the sword leaves.

Knives fell like rain, cutting the body and causing it to fall, and the dogs swarmed to devour it. Even if one escaped from that, many ferocious beasts chased after them, and seeing the iron tree Shalmali forest, they fled there and climbed up and down. Sharp thorns extended sixteen fingers up and down, piercing the body like a sieve, and crows and other iron-beaked birds pecked at the eyes and tore at the flesh, causing terror. Even if one escaped from that, they were tormented by the heat, and seeing a flowing river, they ran to it, only to fall into the extremely hot Vaitarani River. Sinking to the bottom, the flesh and bones separated, leaving only white bones. When they surfaced, the flesh regrew, and they sank again. Even if they wanted to escape, the hell guardians holding weapons on both banks would not allow them to escape. Sometimes they were pulled out with iron hooks, placed face up, and asked what they wanted. They replied: "We don't know anything, we don't see anything, but we are hungry and thirsty." After saying this, they suffered the pain of having burning embers and molten copper poured into their mouths. The above knives, forests, and Shalmali trees are classified as one type, the four surrounding hells. In these hells, although the lifespan is not explicitly stated, one must stay for a hundred thousand years each, so the intensity and duration of the suffering are very long. Fourth, contemplating the temporary suffering: The location: near the hell itself, and in uncertain places such as the seashore, underground, and in water on the surface. The suffering is: being burned by fire, being frozen and cracked, being killed and eaten by executioners, and being happy during the day and suffering at night, or vice versa, and the lifespan is also uncertain. As mentioned in the biographies of "Groma Shen" and "Guardian Monk." Therefore, in those places, the cause of rebirth is, as will be explained, that much has been accumulated in the past, and is still being accumulated now. If there is only this breath between this life and hell, one should not stay comfortably. Shantideva said: Having done the deeds of hell, why live happily here? And as it says in the "Letter to a Friend": The suffering of hell is immeasurable between the breaths of a sinner, how can one not be afraid after hearing it?
