Common Preliminary Teachings: The Jewel Staircase. By Gyurme Dorje. Common Preliminary Teachings: The Jewel Staircase. By Gyurme Dorje. Herein lies the so-called Common Preliminary Teachings: The Jewel Staircase. Om Svasti. Om, may there be well-being!) The so-called Common Preliminary Teachings: The Jewel Staircase. I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Unmoving from the expanse of great bliss and peace, yet with limitless displays of various magical dances, possessing the activity of bestowing all things beneficial and happy, I pay homage to the Lama, the essence of the Three Jewels! From the perilous precipice of the city of existence, to the supreme city of liberation and freedom, the precious staircase, the stages of the path for fortunate ones to quickly and easily enter, are here elucidated. In general, the mind-essence of all sentient beings is primordially Buddha, and to manifest that very essence, there are two ways: relying on the path of gradual entry through study and contemplation for those of lesser intellect, and entering through the path of sudden breakthrough through faith and devotion for those of higher intellect. Both of these methods are present in both the Sutra and Tantra teachings. Of these, if we consider the first, we must train in generating the mind of three pursuits based on the three non-attachments. The first is, by contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, and contemplating its impermanence, we are freed from attachment to this life, and an unfeigned mind of pursuing the happiness of higher realms in the future arises. The second is, by contemplating the suffering of samsara and the law of karma, we are freed from attachment to samsara, and a genuine mind of pursuing the path of liberation for oneself arises. The third is, by cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, we are freed from attachment to self-interest, and an unfeigned mind of wishing to attain enlightenment for the sake of others arises. Thus, until the mind of the three types of individuals that can be transformed arises, meditation is the root of all Dharma. If these three are not born in the mind-stream, then no matter how much one meditates on deities, recites mantras, etc., there is no certainty of where one will go. Therefore, the order of how to practice should be understood as follows: contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, contemplate death and impermanence, contemplate the faults of samsara, and contemplate the law of karma. First, identifying leisure and endowments.

The Difficulty of Finding It (Leisure and Endowment). The first of the three thoughts on the greatness of its meaning (leisure and endowment) is: One must strive to find a way not to be born in this unbearable suffering-filled samsara. And the basis for accomplishing that (not being born in samsara) is this very body of leisure and endowment. Moreover, it is extremely difficult to find, not just this time, so one must single-mindedly think that one must obtain the essence of this life no matter what. That is to say, in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses: Hell beings, pretas, and animals, barbarians, long-lived gods, and those with wrong views, a world devoid of Buddhas, and the mute – these are the eight unfree states. As such, if one is born in the three lower realms, the burden of suffering is heavy, and the physical basis is extremely bad, so there is no leisure for Dharma. The gods of the desire realm are distracted by attachment to desirable objects and have little sense of renunciation. Most of the gods of the form and formless realms are also constantly intoxicated by samadhi, so there is no leisure for Dharma. Being born in a world system where no Buddha has appeared, in a place devoid of Buddhas, or even if a Buddha has appeared, being born in a remote, uncivilized area where the Dharma has not spread, or being born in a place where the Dharma has spread but holding wrong views that deny past and future lives, karma and its results, and the Three Jewels, and becoming foolish and mute, not understanding anything about what to adopt and abandon, having no thought of engaging or withdrawing, those born in this way are the eight unfree states. Among these, the three lower realms and the long-lived gods are non-human unfree states, and the other four are human unfree states. The unfree god is said to be the god of non-discrimination, and it is also said that it is appropriate to identify it as such. Thus, being free from the eight unfree states is leisure. As it says in the Sutra of the Precious Sky: The Bodhisattva Akashagarbha asked: Blessed One, how should one view leisure and endowment? The Buddha replied: The mind being disturbed and distracted by conceptual thoughts is called busyness. The mind calming conceptual thoughts and abiding in its own nature is called leisure. And as it says in the Compendium: Abandoning the eight unfree states, one always finds leisure. Thus it is said. The five personal endowments out of the ten endowments are: Being human, born in the central lands, having complete faculties, not having perverted karma, and having faith in the teachings. As such, I have generally obtained a human body, and specifically, I was born in a central land where the Dharma flourishes, and I have all the faculties such as the five senses.
