Able to know what to accept and reject. Not having committed or caused others to commit the five heinous crimes. Merely having faith in the discipline, the basis for the arising of all white dharmas of the world and beyond, that is, having faith in the Buddha's teachings. These five are included by one's own mind and are conducive to practicing the Dharma, therefore they are called self-endowments. That is, leisure that is free from the eight unfree states and the five self-endowments are one key point. The five other-endowments are: The Buddha's appearance and his teaching of the Dharma, the teaching abiding and following it, and compassion for others. It means that the Buddha appeared in the world, he taught the sublime Dharma, his teaching abides without disappearing, and there are also many who follow the teaching. There are also many who provide material support such as food and clothing to those who practice the Dharma with compassion. It is also said that other compassion refers to the spiritual friend guiding the Dharma with compassion. These five are included by others and are conducive to practicing the Dharma, therefore they are called other-endowments. Moreover, the sutra says: Endowment refers to knowing the nature of the mind, and the meaning of correct wisdom is called endowment. Therefore, leisure is the essence, and endowment is its distinguishing characteristic. Since it is very difficult to obtain such a body that possesses the eighteen leisures and endowments, one should now focus one's mind on the Dharma. As it is said in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": Having obtained such leisure, if I do not cultivate virtue, there is no greater deception than this, and there is no greater delusion than this. It is just like that. Secondly, regarding the reason why it is difficult to obtain: Among sentient beings, the beings of the three lower realms are very numerous, as endless as the dust of the great earth. The beings of the higher realms are very few, said to be like the dust on a fingernail. Among the three lower realms, the fewest are animals, and most of them live in the great ocean, which is inconceivable. Those scattered are also filling the earth, mountains, rivers, and sky. Compared to this, the beings of gods and humans are like a very small part. Moreover, in general, the beings of humans are few. Especially the people of Jambudvipa are few. Even more special are the people who possess the Dharma.

The body is merely the edge of existence. Even so rare, among sentient beings, those who commit evil deeds are extremely numerous, without end. Those who do good are few and far between. Among them, those who can obtain a human body and keep the precepts are even rarer, so it is difficult to obtain a human body. In the Madhyamakavatara, it says, "The cause of higher rebirth is none other than discipline." Thus, it is certain that the cause of higher rebirth is only discipline. And the example of its rarity is also given by the Protector Nagarjuna: "Like a yoke with a hole in the ocean, and a turtle meeting it, it is even more difficult for a king to obtain a human body from an animal. By practicing the sacred Dharma, make it bear fruit." This example also illustrates that, in general, it is difficult to obtain a human body, and in particular, obtaining such a leisure and endowment human body with Dharma is due to the power of accumulating much merit. Therefore, now that we have obtained this difficult-to-obtain perfect human body, we must practice pure Dharma for the sake of lasting happiness. Think in this way. The third is to think that the attainment is meaningful. If you think, what is the need to obtain such a difficult-to-obtain human body? The benefits are extremely great. Temporarily, from birth to birth, one can easily attain the happiness of the heavens, and all the perfect things such as body and enjoyment. Moreover, one can also practice the Nirvana of the lower vehicle and the unsurpassed Bodhi. If one cannot obtain this human body, let alone liberation, there is no way to practice even the happiness of samsara. Therefore, if we do not take the essence from leisure and endowment now, it will be like returning empty-handed from the island of jewels, and the loss will be extremely great if it goes by without meaning. The Bodhicaryavatara says, "Relying on the boat of the human body, one is liberated from the great river of suffering. This boat is difficult to obtain later, so the foolish should not fall asleep at this time." Just like that, the basis for accomplishing special wishes is obtained once, and so much has been wasted meaninglessly before. Now, no matter what, we must strive single-mindedly to practice the holy Dharma. We must remember from the bottom of our hearts that it is important not to let leisure and endowment pass by without meaning. The second is to think about the impermanence of death. Although everyone thinks that death will eventually come, they always feel that they will not die for a while.
