The mind of hope arises even until death. Obscured by evil thoughts, one indulges in the distractions of this life. Postponing the accomplishment of the next life, one becomes dominated by laziness, therefore, one must contemplate impermanence. Among these, it is necessary to contemplate death, there is no certainty when one will die, and to contemplate that death cannot be avoided in any way. The first of these three is to contemplate that one must die. Having obtained the leisure and endowment of a human body, if one were immortal, that would be good, but there is not the slightest certainty of permanence. No matter what kind of body one takes, or what kind of companion one relies on, one cannot escape death. All beings on earth that have appeared in the past, that will appear in the future, and that actually exist now, cannot escape death. In short, how many enemies, friends, and neutral people have died from the time we were born until today? So, what certainty do I have of not dying? The sutra says: All that has come and will come, all will abandon this body and go, the wise should realize that all of this will perish, one should abide in the Dharma, and one must practice diligently. As Ashvagosha said: On earth or in the heavens, is there anyone who was born and has not died? Have you seen, heard, or doubted such a thing? No matter where you go, there is no place where death cannot reach. It is not in the sky, nor in the depths of the ocean, nor even if you enter the caves of all the mountains. As it is said, in general, one cannot escape death. However, even if one lives a long life, years, months, days, moments, and instants do not stop, but one gets closer and closer to death, so what has passed has passed, and what remains will not increase, but will constantly decrease. As the "Extensive Play Sutra" says: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the life of beings is like water flowing down a steep cliff, the life of beings is like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like water flowing down a steep cliff. And as it is said in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way": Day and night do not stop, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is no increase from elsewhere, how can I not die? As it is said. Therefore, in the beginning, when one is young, one does not practice the Dharma because one has not thought about it, and in the end, when one is old, even if one tries to practice the Dharma, the strength of body and mind is exhausted, and one cannot improve.

Arising. Half of that time is spent in sleep. Furthermore, one is dominated by distractions, walking, and other meaningless activities, so the opportunity to practice Dharma is only a little. One should recognize that all the perfections and deceptions of this life are like the pleasure of a single dream, and thus diligently practice the holy Dharma. Second, thinking that there is no certainty when death will come. Although one will eventually die, one thinks that one will not die for the time being, so there is no need to rush so much. In general, except for beings whose voices are unpleasant, the lifespan of other beings is uncertain. In particular, the lifespan of those in Jambudvipa is very uncertain. At first, there were times when lifespans could reach immeasurable years, but in the end, one must take ten years as the limit of lifespan. Even now, no matter old, young, or middle-aged, no one can be certain when they will die. As it says in the Treasury: "Here, there is no fixed lifespan, the shortest is only ten years, the first lifespan is immeasurable." If one is likely to extend one's lifespan by sixty or seventy years due to past good deeds, one cannot start counting from today, because so much has already passed, and it is impossible to predict how long one can last now. Perhaps one can only extend it by thirty or forty years. In any case, observing the beings one has seen and heard who have died suddenly, we ourselves cannot escape the same fate. The Omniscient Dharma Lord said: "This life is impermanent like a clay pot, the appearance of the next life and the future life, it is impossible to know which will come first, therefore from today onwards, one should store up the holy Dharma." As it is said, since we cannot know which will come first, tomorrow or our future life, we must completely cut off the ties of all affairs in this life. As Nagarjuna said: "The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, the seven suns, burned by fire, these sentient beings, even if they turn to ashes, will not remain, let alone extremely fragile humans?" As it is said, the body is as fragile as a water bubble, the breath is like autumn mist, ready to disappear at any time, and the mind, which has no autonomy, has nowhere to go. As it is said: "It is unreasonable to think that one will not die today and live in comfort." Nagarjuna also said: "The causes of death are many, but the causes of survival are few. Even those causes of survival can become causes of death. Therefore, one should always store up the Dharma." As it is said, external causes include humans and animals, ghosts and demons, and so on.
