I am of the nature of Vajra. Seeing, hearing, remembering, writing, and depicting the scenes of hell, one feels fear. What need is there to mention those who actually experience the unbearable ripening of karma? It is said. Here, the pain of being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in a single day is not even a small fraction of the suffering in hell. It is said. The cause of such suffering is solely one's own misdeeds, so one should strive to abandon them. Second, contemplating the suffering of the pretas: They mostly reside five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa, scattered everywhere, as if covering all the lands and mountains. In this regard, the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness mentions thirty-six types, but if summarized, there are three types: those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with obscurations related to food and drink. Those with external obscurations are afflicted by hunger and thirst, causing their mouths and bodies to be dry and emaciated, their throats and limbs to be thin, and their hair to be tangled. They run around everywhere in search of food and drink, but they cannot find any. Even if they see piles of food, rivers, and fruit-bearing trees from afar, when they arrive there, the food disappears without a trace. The rivers dry up or turn into pus and blood. The trees are seen as dry stumps without fruit. Even if it does not happen like that, there is the suffering of many people holding weapons who block and guard them. Those with internal obscurations are as it is said: "Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, and bellies as large as a mountain, afflicted by hunger and thirst. They do not even have the ability to seek a small amount of unclean waste." As it is said, even if they find food and drink, they cannot get it into their mouths. Even if it gets into their mouths, the food is lost in their cheeks. The thirst is dried up by the poison in their mouths. Even if they swallow a little, it cannot pass through their throats. Even if it passes through, their bellies are not filled, and so on, they suffer because they cannot eat or drink. Those with obscurations related to food and drink: Even the food and drink that enters their bellies turns into burning flames, burning their internal organs and so on. And eating filth, which means eating unclean and foul-smelling things like feces, urine, pus, blood, phlegm, and mucus. And evil things like poison and embers, which only cause suffering.

They must eat those. In general, all of them constantly endure unbearable suffering from hunger and thirst. Without clothes, they are scorched by heat and frozen by cold. Even the summer moon scorches them, and the winter sun freezes them. In summer, even the clouds rain fire. They are always exhausted and worn out from searching for food. Because of weakness, their joints dislocate, and they burn with fire. They become enemies to each other, suffering the fear of being bound, beaten, and killed. Without any refuge, they flee in great terror, and so on. They must endure intense and prolonged suffering. Regarding the difference in lifespan, the Treasury states, "Five hundred months and days." This means that one human month is counted as one day, making it five hundred years. The Suhrllekha states, "They will not die even at five thousand or ten thousand." Thus, it is said that some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, and some have ten thousand years. The cause of such suffering is miserliness and obstruction, so one must be diligent and careful. Third, contemplating the suffering of animals: There are two types: general and scattered. The general ones reside in the great ocean. Without any refuge or place of protection, they are driven by the waves and wander aimlessly. They eat each other, the big ones swallowing the small ones, and the small ones burrowing into the bodies of the big ones to eat them. The nagas are burned daily by gravel and eaten by garudas, and so on. They are always in fear of the emergence of enemies, and their suffering is unbearable. The scattered ones exist in the realms of gods and humans. Those not owned by humans are constantly tormented by the fear of enemies, and their minds have no peace. They are eaten by birds and wild animals, and humans kill them indiscriminately. Those who are owned are plucked of their feathers, have their noses pierced, are beaten and driven, and are tormented by heavy burdens. They are killed for their meat, blood, skin, and bones. Because of foolishness and ignorance, they do not know what to accept and reject, and they are confused and suffer. Furthermore, there is hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, and so on, which are similar to the sufferings of hell and pretas. The Suhrllekha states, "Even in the birth-place of animals, there are various sufferings such as killing, imprisonment, and beating."
