Meditate that all beings are extremely pitiable. First, connect this meditation with your own root mother: if that mother were burned in this place, or stiffened from the cold, or cut and chopped by others, it would be extremely pitiable. Likewise, meditate with compassion on those beings born in hell, because they are all kind. Extend it in this way: focus on the mother being tormented by hunger, thirst, and disease, and visualize pretas; focus on the mother being old and infirm, unable to care for herself, yet being beaten, gathered, and exploited by others, and visualize animals; focus on the mother's vision being blurred, unable to discern the direction from a great cliff and about to fall, or falling and experiencing suffering from which there is no escape, and using this as an example, cultivate unbearable intense compassion for the beings of the three higher realms. These are also gradually expanded like loving-kindness. When unfeigned compassion arises, think: I will save these aged mothers and the six types of beings from all sins and sufferings. I will liberate them from the suffering of samsara. May all these beings be free from suffering! May they be free from the causes of suffering—karma and afflictions! Think this way, and also express it in words. In the realization of Avalokiteśvara, it is said: If there is one dharma, it is as if all the Buddha's dharmas are placed in the palm of your hand, what is that one dharma? It is great compassion. This shows immeasurable benefits. Like that, generate ungenerated loving-kindness and compassion, increase what has been generated, and learn to abandon thoughts of self-interest, and with the mind of equalizing and exchanging self and others, practice giving and taking. Shantideva said: If you do not completely exchange the suffering of yourself and others, you will not achieve Buddhahood, and there will be no happiness even in samsara. Therefore, first, you want happiness and do not want suffering, likewise, all beings are the same as you, so the wishes are equal. Because you are alone and beings are many, it is even more than equal. With the wish to take on yourself the suffering that the aged mother beings do not want, and to give them all the desired happiness, at the same time as exhaling, all the merit and happiness that you have accumulated from beginningless time,
