Attachment to enjoyment gives rise to desire. Based on that, arrogance, jealousy, and miserliness arise. Towards those who harm or injure oneself or one's side, anger and hatred arise, along with their manifestations such as malice, rage, and resentment. Accumulating karma through these actions leads to negative destinies through non-virtuous deeds; virtuous deeds lead to higher realms. Immovable contaminated concentration leads to rebirth in the form and formless realms. Therefore, in order to prevent oneself and others from wandering in samsara, one must abandon the root of all suffering, which is the disturbing emotions. Thinking in this way, examine and meditate on the disturbing emotions in one's own mindstream. Second, contemplate the cause and effect of liberation: What is sought after abandoning samsara is liberation. Liberation is the realization of the true nature of selflessness without error, by abandoning the obscurations of disturbing emotions through uncontaminated wisdom. For that, one needs single-pointed concentration. The cause of that is the pure discipline of renunciation. Therefore, in order to be liberated from samsara, one should maintain discipline, cultivate concentration, generate wisdom, and realize the meaning of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. These are the practices of the intermediate being, meaning the preliminary practices are completed. Second, the intermediate virtue, which is connected with the Great Vehicle, is the practice of pure higher intention, which is the explanation of the path of the Great Being. This has two aspects: learning the entrance to the mind, and expanding it. The first aspect is: knowing the faults of samsara and abandoning them. One must attain liberation and nirvana, and the enlightenment of nirvana to be attained has three types: Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and the complete Buddha. Among them, the complete perfection of one's own abandonment and realization, and the unobstructed activity for the benefit of others, is the supreme of liberation and enlightenment. One must attain the state of a fully enlightened Buddha. Therefore, one should repeatedly think: How can I attain the state of Buddhahood? The second aspect is to expand it, which has two aspects: contemplating the connection of cause and effect, and contemplating its meaning. The first aspect is: I must attain the state of Buddhahood, and the reason for that is the need for bodhicitta. The reason for bodhicitta is great compassion, the reason for great compassion is loving-kindness, the reason for loving-kindness is knowing and repaying kindness, and the reason for knowing and repaying kindness is samsara.

All sentient beings abiding here should be recognized as mothers and fathers. All sentient beings pervading the sky are mothers and fathers. Each one is immensely kind. How wonderful it would be if these beings were free from suffering and possessed happiness! To establish these beings in happiness, I shall attain Buddhahood. Having attained it, I shall also establish all sentient beings in the state of Buddhahood. Thus, contemplate. Second, contemplating the meaning of cause and effect has three aspects: loving-kindness, compassion, and cultivating the mind of enlightenment. First, visualize the root mother in front of you. This mother first gave birth to my body, endured many hardships for my sake, and even gave me her precious life. Eventually, starting from teaching a single word, she showed me all worldly affairs and raised me with love greater than her own. She bestowed immeasurable benefits and protected me from immeasurable harm, her kindness is profound. How wonderful it would be if this mother possessed happiness and well-being! Not only in this life, but in countless other lives, she has been my mother. Alternately being my mother, she has bestowed benefits as she does now. Sometimes she has also been my father, relatives, friends, and close companions, bestowing benefits that cannot be measured. Thus, contemplate that the mother is the most precious in your heart, desiring her benefit and happiness, and cultivate genuine loving-kindness until it arises in your mindstream. After it arises, start with a few relatives and others who are easy to love, then the people of your village, gradually expanding the scope until you cultivate loving-kindness towards all sentient beings of the six realms in the three thousand great thousand worlds and throughout the sky, just like your root mother, until loving-kindness arises. May these mothers have happiness and well-being! May I be able to establish these beings in perfect happiness and well-being! Thus, contemplate again and again. In the "Precious Garland," it is said that cultivating loving-kindness brings eight great benefits. Even giving three hundred jars of delicious food three times a day does not equal the merit of cultivating loving-kindness for a moment, which falls like rain. Thus, it is briefly taught. Second, cultivating compassion: These kind old mother sentient beings all equally desire happiness in body and mind, but they only experience suffering. They experience the results of suffering such as the three lower realms. Most of the happiness in the higher realms is also the cause of suffering. Some have accumulated extremely heavy sins, and immediately after their breath stops, they are born in hell.
