The suffering is particularly intense. The abodes of the cold hells, all the ground is pervaded by the nature of snow and ice, mixed with wind and blizzards, so that the cold is unbearable. The eight hells, from the Blistered Hell to the Greatly Bursting Like a Lotus Hell, the lower is seven times colder than the upper. The lifespan is extremely long. The four directions of the eight hot hells have four neighboring hells: a pit of embers, a swamp of corpses, a path filled with razors, and the trees of sword-leaved forests. And the ephemeral hells, uncertain in the underground and above ground, the form of the body and the way of experiencing suffering are uncertain, immeasurable to think about. The pretas exist in the realm of Yama in the underworld, and are scattered throughout the underground, above ground, and in space. Regarding these kinds, the Sutra of Mindfulness says there are thirty-six, but if summarized, there are three: those with external obscurations, food and drink are seen as pus and blood, and even if they go to the side of rivers, etc., they immediately dry up. Seeing people holding armor and weapons guarding, etc., they cannot find food and drink for many years, so they are always suffering from hunger. Those with internal obscurations, they have no power to eat and drink. As the "Letter to a Friend" says: 'Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, bellies as large as mountains, afflicted by hunger. They have no power to seek even a small amount of unclean discarded food.' Thus. Those with obscurations of food and drink, the food and drink they eat turns into flames in their stomachs and burns them, and some eat feces and urine, cutting off their own flesh and eating it. All of these are always exhausted by the unbearable hunger and thirst. Because they have no clothes, they are scorched by the heat, frozen stiff by the cold, etc., the suffering is heavy. The lifespan can last fifteen thousand years. Animals in general live in the great ocean, there are countless different kinds, without a place to rely on. Driven by the waves, they wander aimlessly. They devour each other. They are always without peace due to fear. Those scattered in the human realm, those not possessed by humans, are always without peace in their minds for fear of enemies appearing. Those possessed by humans are used for riding, carrying loads, etc., and are killed for meat and skin, suffering.

The second suffering: Mainly, Animals are foolish and dull, and they eat each other while alive, so they must constantly live in fear. If one had to experience such suffering oneself, it would be unbearable, so one resolves to practice only the sacred Dharma. Fourth is contemplating the results of karma: As stated in the Sutra of One Hundred Karmas, "Karmas are also various, thus making beings various." As it is said, all happiness and suffering arise solely from accumulated karma. Accumulating virtuous karma will result in experiencing the fruit of happiness, while accumulating non-virtuous karma will only result in experiencing the fruit of suffering, just as whatever seed is sown will ripen into the corresponding crop. Whether it is virtue or vice, from the short time of accumulating the cause, it will gradually increase a hundredfold, a thousandfold, so the fruit of ripening is extremely great. No matter what kind of good or bad deed is done, if it is not destroyed by the antidote, it will not disappear until the fruit ripens. Whatever good or bad deed one has done will ripen on oneself, and one will not encounter deeds that one has not done. You must seriously contemplate these principles, thereby adopting virtue and abandoning vice. Among them, the main summary is the ten non-virtuous deeds: Through the three ways of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, killing any sentient being, large or small; taking what is not given through force, theft, and deception; engaging in sexual misconduct with those protected by lineage, owner, and law—these are the three non-virtuous deeds of the body. Lying to parents, elders, and juniors; sowing discord, speaking ill of others in secret; speaking harsh words, including direct, indirect, and relayed; speaking false, worldly, and meaningless chatter—these are the four non-virtuous deeds of speech. Coveting the possessions of oneself, others, and neither; generating harmful thoughts arising from hatred, jealousy, and resentment; holding wrong views about karma, truth, and the Three Jewels—these are the three non-virtuous deeds of the mind. Through these actions, one will experience the results of ripening, similarity, and dominance respectively. Among them, due to the power of afflictive emotions and hatred, committing evil deeds in many places, relying on vast environments, will lead to falling into hell; due to attachment and moderate evil deeds, it will lead to rebirth as a hungry ghost; Due to ignorance and minor evil deeds, it will lead to rebirth as an animal. Therefore, one should contemplate that these are the roots of suffering, strive to purify the evil deeds done in the past, and vow not to commit them in the future. Conversely, one should abstain from killing and not lie.
