It's like an arrow shot by a strong man, or water flowing down a steep cliff, or an animal being led to the slaughterhouse. As it says in "The Root of the Tree": "Like a prisoner being led to the slaughter, each step brings them closer to death." And so on. Thinking about how there's no certainty when death will come: other beings and other continents have a definite lifespan, but the beings of Jambudvipa have no definite lifespan, so there are many cases of dying right after birth, etc. The body is just a collection of impure substances, with no essence whatsoever. External causes include fire, water, cliffs, wild animals, etc. Internal causes include diseases and types of spirits. Circumstances of life, such as unsuitable food and medicine, etc., are all causes of death, and there are so many of them, and there's no certainty when they will come. As Nagarjuna said: "The causes of death are many, while the causes of life are few. Even those [causes of life] are themselves causes of death. Therefore, always accumulate Dharma." And so on. Thinking about how, when it comes to death, anything other than Dharma is of no benefit whatsoever: at the time of death, no matter how much wealth one has, one cannot take even a single needle; no matter how many relatives and friends one has, one cannot take even the lowest servant; one's own body must also be left behind. Consciousness follows after the karmic consequences of good and evil. As Chosden Rabjor said: "Except for virtue and non-virtue, all beings will turn away from you, and no one will follow you. Know this, and contemplate it well." And so on. Therefore, nothing else is of any benefit when it comes to death. Only the Holy Dharma is certain to be of benefit at the time of death and in all future lives, so I will think, "From this day forward, I will strive in the Holy Dharma." Third, thinking about the suffering of the lower realms: Death alone is not enough; one must take rebirth involuntarily. There is no autonomy over where one is born; karma, both virtuous and non-virtuous, throws one to the higher realms of the gods or the lower realms. Now, one is unable to practice virtue; one only engages in non-virtuous actions with body, speech, and mind, so one will be born in the three lower realms. If one is born there, the suffering will be unimaginable, and the lifespan will be long, with no time for liberation. Among them, hell is: the place of the hot hells, on a ground of burning iron, where fire burns very fiercely, and the water and lakes are transformed into molten copper and boiling liquid, and the trees are made of red-hot iron, etc., and it is filled with Yama's minions and rakshasas due to karma, as well as fierce birds, snakes, and wild animals. From the Rebirth Hell to the Uninterrupted Hell, the eight hells, the suffering of the later hells is greater than the suffering of the earlier hells.
