The noble mother Tara, her body green in color, clear and pure like the essence of refined turquoise, radiating five-colored light. She possesses a peaceful and smiling countenance. Her right hand is extended in the gesture of supreme generosity (Varada Mudra) upon her right knee. Her left hand at her heart makes the gesture of refuge (Abhaya Mudra), with thumb and forefinger joined, holding the stem of a blue utpala flower, the blossom opening near her ear. Her hair is half-bound in an updo, adorned at the top with a radiant jewel, and half-falling freely. She is adorned with various precious jewels as a crown, earrings, necklace, torque, bracelets, armlets, bangles for hands and feet, and a belt. She wears a celestial silk upper garment and skirt of various colors. Her right leg is slightly extended, and her left leg is drawn in, clearly visualized as seated upon a white lotus and moon cushion. Regarding this, it is done only as a support for focusing the mind, completely cutting off all hopes, doubts, thoughts about clarity or lack thereof, abiding or not abiding, and so on. Establish a watch of mindfulness that is just non-distracting. When dullness and excitement are equal, fix the mind on the heart and maintain an equal gaze. If dullness, lethargy, or turbidity arise, fix the mind on the space between the eyebrows and gaze upwards. If excitement and agitation are strong, fix the mind on a blue drop at the navel and lower the gaze. In all cases, direct the three—mind, eye, and breath—as a single, unified spear, and like threading a needle, make the one-pointed mind not stray elsewhere, doing it briefly and frequently. If it wanders, immediately seize it with mindfulness and place it back in its natural state. In this way, repeatedly visualize clearly and hold the mind. Once it is stable, release it naturally in a non-distracted state and let it abide as it is. At the end of the session, visualize the deity meditated upon in front dissolving into light and merging into oneself. Imagine that the heart of the Lama Jetsunma and one's own mind are inseparable and of one taste, and abide in that state. Second, training in the objectless practice: Straighten the body posture, clear the breath, and cut off the conceptual thoughts of the three times. Do not chase after what has happened and been done in the past. Do not anticipate what will be done, what will happen, or what will arise in the future. Do not make any alterations, negations, or affirmations to the present awareness, but in a non-distracted state, keep the awareness clear and lucid. If dullness or excitement arise, adjust the gaze and so on as described above. When abiding in a clear and lucid state, cut off all fabrications.

Again and again, settle down, and don't get bored with meditation. When thoughts of the six consciousnesses arise, such as the sight of the eye, the sound of the ear, etc., settle down on that as the object of mindfulness. If you get bored because of excessive distraction, don't pull it inward and suppress it, but let it wander as it will, and guard it on that. At first, alternate between tightening and loosening. Once you are used to it, you will be free from the faults of being too tight or too loose, and by guarding it moderately, the three faults of abiding will gradually arise: the first is like a stream flowing down a steep mountain, the second is like a slow-flowing river, and the third is like a calm and unmoving ocean, these will appear in order. In this way, if the characteristic of calm abiding arises in the mindstream, then the root of all qualities such as samadhi and vipassana will be established. The second, the dhyana that accomplishes qualities, is that which accomplishes liberation, overcoming, the birthplaces of exhaustion, and supernormal knowledges, etc. The third, the dhyana that benefits sentient beings, is benefiting others by relying on samadhi and supernormal knowledges, both of which arise from the previous perfect samadhi. The third, taking wisdom into practice, its nature is to thoroughly distinguish dharmas, and its cause is accumulating a great collection of merit. As Shantideva said: All these limbs, the Buddha spoke for the sake of wisdom. In general, there are two types: thought and action. The first has three types: realizing the emptiness of reality, is the wisdom of understanding ultimate truth; understanding the nature, cause and effect, and dependent origination of all knowable things without error, is the wisdom of understanding conventional truth; knowing how to benefit beings through the four means of gathering, is the wisdom of understanding the benefit of others. There are also three types of action: selflessness of persons, selflessness of dharmas, studying the meaning of the great treatises such as having emptiness and compassion as their essence, mainly establishing the view, this is the wisdom to be understood, so it is only briefly divided into sections and not elaborated. The wisdom to be cultivated here is the wisdom of vipassana, which is the actual thing to be cultivated. On this, as it is said in the root text, according to the stages of the path of Atisha, first examine, and then explain the way to settle down, divided into two types: with the examination of
