So, what are the definite causes of the arrogant spirits? The general cause is the ten non-virtuous actions. Specifically, the individual causes are: Yama, produced from hatred; Matri, produced from desire; Tirthikas, from twenty wrong views; male and female demons, from ignorance; Lha, from miserliness; male and female Yakshas, from harmful intent; Rudra, from broken vows; or the worldly planets. Killing leads to male and female Rakshasas; jealousy leads to Tsen; attachment to desirable qualities leads to kings; pride leads to the blind; stinginess leads to Tebra; laziness leads to ghosts; broken vows lead to Damsi; Nagas arise from ignorance. Sixth, the definite signs are: Thus, all arrogant ones, arising from different wrong views, therefore, have different bodies and ornaments, as described in the praises. Thus, these arrogant ones who protect the teachings, although they have not experienced the bliss beyond the world, have a mind-made body, the contaminated direct perception, possess the power of miraculous abilities—the union of two, go anywhere in an instant with their minds, kill the bad reputation (of diseases) and the punishment (of sins), and are friends of those who hold vows. First, they offered their life-heart before the Victorious Ones and made vows, mostly guarding their vows like their lives, and are the executioners of those who break their vows. Their power is: these eighteen arrogant ones mostly have power over the three realms. Some have power over one or one continent. In particular, the three existences reside in the belly of Karma Yama. The real one is Rahu. Some have a lifespan of three kalpas, some have one, there is no certainty. Ultimately, all who see the face of the wisdom deity will attain enlightenment as prophesied. Some also have to go through the suffering of the lower realms. From the Tantra of Manifesting Wrath, the fifth chapter, "Revealing the Enemies and Obstacles to be Killed." The powerful Black One also said: There are three ways to subdue vicious enemies and obstacles: substance, mantra, and samadhi. There are also three types of substances: offering substances, support substances, and tormenting substances. First, the offering substances are in accordance with the general secret mantras of Vajrayana—that is, the outer, inner, and secret offerings themselves. In particular, medicine—a mixture of eight thousand herbs, blood—a ta mixed with two causes and conditions, and torma—five grains and blood wine.
