And it is said that there are four bardos: the bardo of dying, the bardo of dharmata, and the bardo of existence. In the Dzogchen treatises, it is said: the bardo of the birth place is like cutting off the shackles of a lattice door; the bardo of dying is like a beautiful woman applying light by looking in a mirror; the bardo of dharmata is like a child running into its mother's lap with trust; the bardo of existence is like plugging a rat hole in a collapsing field embankment to continue the karma. Thus it is said. Here, either the bardo of existence is generally explained, or the three bardos of dying, dharmata, and existence are separately explained. From the "Great Bliss Heart Essence" it says: At the end of the inner and outer stages of dissolution, recognizing the union of the mother and child light, for those of sharp faculties, one can attain the Dharmakaya; in the bardo, when the signs of uncertainty are complete, the clear appearance of the deity arises as the Sambhogakaya, for those of medium faculties, one can attain the Sambhogakaya; initially experiencing rebirth, traversing the remaining path, for those of lesser faculties, one can attain the Nirmanakaya. As it is said, among these, the first, those of sharp faculties attain the Dharmakaya, or, in the bardo of dying, like a beautiful woman applying light by looking in a mirror, the "Great Bliss Heart Essence" says: When the near and far signs of death are complete, the chakras of the five wheels are destroyed, and the bindu of equal dwelling is lost, the white and red bindus meet, mind and prana dissolve into the heart, knowing and experiencing the pure light of the child and the spontaneously accomplished light of the mother, when the two merge like rivers flowing into the ocean, abiding in awareness, for those of sharp faculties who are accustomed to it, one can attain the Dharmakaya. As it is said. Long-term signs of death, from months or years before, various unfavorable conditions arise, and the senses become unclear, awareness becomes fluctuating, etc., are external signs; the decline of lifespan, form, limbs, color, etc., are internal signs; the five poisons become intense, virtuous activities are neglected, prophecies of yidams, dakinis, etc., and sudden manifestations of miraculous powers, abilities, etc., are secret signs. When these occur, the superior one uses the view as the path of the play of dharmata, the medium one diligently practices the practice as if it were an illusion without attachment, the inferior one practices equanimity in a solitary place like a wild animal fleeing from an enemy, the main practice is to use awareness as the path. Second, the near signs of death, due to the exhaustion and disturbance of the five elements, the disease of death

When struck, consciousness becomes blurred. The essence of the senses is exhausted, leading to blurred vision. The essence of water is exhausted, leading to a dry mouth and tongue. The essence of the spleen is exhausted, leading to a stiff tongue. The essence of the liver is exhausted, leading to increased tears. The essence of the kidneys is exhausted, leading to deafness. The essence of the lungs is exhausted, leading to a collapsed nose. The essence of blood is exhausted, leading to the separation of the cheekbones. The essence of hair is exhausted, leading to raised eyebrows. The essence of bones is exhausted, leading to the formation of tartar. The essence of breath is exhausted, leading to difficult and labored breathing. The clarity of mind is reduced, leading to confusion and flickering lights. Hiccuping sounds are emitted, limbs shake, and the head cannot be lifted. In particular, the order of dissolution of the four elements, the disintegration of the five chakras, and the manner in which the co-emergent winds dissipate are as follows: The earth wind is absorbed, causing the body to shake and become heavy. Consciousness becomes dull. Appearances manifest vaguely like a mirage. The navel chakra disintegrates. The water wind is absorbed, causing saliva and nasal mucus to flow. The body becomes cold and loses its luster, and breathing becomes uncomfortable. The heart chakra disintegrates. The fire wind is absorbed, causing heat to recede from the extremities. Appearances manifest as flickering, like fireflies. The throat chakra disintegrates. The wind of wind is absorbed, and consciousness dissolves into the wind, causing an inability to inhale. Consciousness becomes confused, and a slight light appears. The crown and secret place chakras disintegrate. The five elements dissolve, causing the objects of the five senses to cease. At this time, the external breath ceases, and the internal breath has not yet returned, which is the time to perform introductions and so on. After that, the power of the A-shad ro-ma (Tibetan: ཨ་ཤད་རོ་མ།) obtained from the lower end of the central channel from the mother is exhausted, causing it to run upwards. Appearances manifest as a red expanse. The thought of desire ceases. The power of the single syllable Hum (Tibetan: ཧཾ།, Devanagari: हं, Romanized Sanskrit: haṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hum) obtained from the upper end of the central channel from the father is exhausted, causing it to flow downwards. Appearances manifest as a white expanse. The thought of hatred ceases. Between the meeting of the red and white drops in the heart, the wind-mind is enveloped, causing a black expanse. The thought of ignorance ceases. At this time, the bindu, wind, and mind enter the central channel, causing the meeting of the mother and son clear light, the state of Samantabhadra, which transcends all elaboration. For example, like the clear sky at dawn, it appears nakedly and clearly. Recognizing this and remaining in it, depending on the strength of practice, there are cases of remaining in the state for seven days, five days, or three days. For ordinary people, the clear light manifests only for a moment.
