Secondly, rest purely in the state of calm abiding. Within that state, look at the nature of mind nakedly. What is its shape, color, and so on? What is its place and support? How does it appear to be identified? Examine and analyze it step by step. Furthermore, if it appears as a shape, is it round, square, or the shape of the container and its contents? If it appears as a color, is it white, black, or something else? Examine each one individually. Likewise, does this mind reside in external objects such as earth, stones, mountains, rocks, plants, and trees, or does it reside within the body, the ripening of karma? Does it reside in the parts of the body from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, or does it reside universally? If it resides universally, does it reside in the manner of being inside and outside, or in a mixed manner? If it is mixed, how do you individually examine it when the mind projects onto the appearance of objects? Similarly, is the essence of the mind empty, clear, or identifiable? If it resides in emptiness, is it like the sky, devoid of anything, or does it have the nature of clarity and awareness, like the sun, moon, or a lamp? Examine it well. Secondly, within the clarity and emptiness of the mind, Allow a coarse thought of the three poisons to arise. Examine and analyze how it appears in terms of shape, color, place, support, identification, and so on. Likewise, when subtle thoughts arise or expand, look and analyze as before. Furthermore, examine and analyze all the subtle and coarse arising of appearances, such as the happiness and suffering of the container and its contents, enemies and friends. In this way, when the appearance aspect does not cease, if you realize that this appearance, devoid of clinging to the alaya consciousness, is a non-radiant, inexpressible state, then the experience of your own ground is born. Secondly, there are four ways to cut off the root of that basis by imputation: deciding that the arising of thoughts is mind; deciding that appearances are mind; cutting off the root of the transformation of place; and repeating that whatever arises is unborn. The first is: within the state of equipoise, expand a thought of anger. From what does that basis arise? If it arises from the state of equipoise, is it like a mother giving birth to a child, or like one lamp spreading to many, or is the mind the thought itself? Examine it. Does the appearance of anger have true clinging, or is its essence unidentifiable? Finally, is the thought blocked or not blocked? If it is blocked, by what kind of condition is it blocked? If it subsides, does it subside on its own, or does it vanish due to conditions? As an example, examine and analyze the various subtle, coarse, and medium thoughts as before.

And should be known. The manifestation of the unobstructed mind arises in conceptual thoughts, or only appears there, but conceptual thoughts and mind-essence are inseparable, like the ocean and waves, should be understood. Second, deciding appearances as mind: In the state of equipoise, allow any external appearance to arise, and examine the three places of origin, dwelling, and going. Are the appearance and mind one or different? If different, how do they exist as outer and inner, above and below each other? Does each establish its own independent essence, or does it only appear as such? If it only appears as such, then there is only one mind, and appearing as two is contradictory. If appearance and mind are not different, then examine whether the mind has become appearance or the appearance has become mind. For example, just as a clear crystal ball appears in various colors due to external conditions, from the unobstructed mind, until it is purified, when encountering external conditions, it appears in various ways, but its essence is not other than mind, and after deciding this, determine that all kinds of appearances are mind. Third, cutting off the root of abiding and moving: In the state of equipoise, let it abide in a relaxed state, and observe the self-nature of the abiding aspect. Also, in the state of abiding, let a movement suddenly change, and observe its self-nature. With these two, abiding and moving, examine the differences in identifying the three places of origin, dwelling, and going. If there is a difference between the two, then examine the differences in whether they are good or bad, praised or not praised, whether they are established or not, and whether there is identification or not. If the difference is not established, then is the difference also taken as an example of sameness? If there is no difference, then in which of the three times is there no difference? If the same is taken as an example, then how are they the same, etc., should be observed and analyzed. Both are mind-essence, the only one without a root, without identification, self-knowing, self-purifying, self-luminous emptiness, and after realizing that they are one in essence, there is no need to accept or reject, abandon or adopt abiding and moving. If abiding, then on top of abiding, if moving, then on top of moving, determine that it is clear and empty, self-liberated. Fourth, turning whatever arises back to unborn: In the state of equipoise, like this, conceptual thoughts and various appearances are the unobstructed play of mind-essence. Now, what is the self-nature of this mind-essence itself? Look intently and examine the three places of origin, dwelling, and going. That is, first, it is not produced by a cause, it is rootless from the beginning. In the middle, it does not abide anywhere in shape, form, etc., and is free from identification. Finally, there is no trace of going here, and it is understood like a self-sounding conch shell, from the beginning.
