The big eat the small, the small pierce the big. Many gather to eat one, one alone eats many. The Nagas are burned daily by grains of sand and fear the Garudas. Scattered across the earth, mountains, and rivers, birds, wild animals, livestock, sheep, and so on, also eat and harm each other. People, for the sake of flesh, skin, and bones, involuntarily kill. Furthermore, loading unbearable weights, plowing, milking, shearing wool, plucking feathers, driving, beating, and so on, the suffering of exploitation, and the common suffering of ignorance, are inconceivable. Life is not definitely long or short. Some of the longest even experience suffering for eons. We have also been born many times in the three lower realms, and there is not one of these sufferings that we have not experienced. Now, because we have not given up this life, we have done everything we should not have done for its sake, so the place to go in the future will only be worse. There is nothing to experience but suffering. If we cannot bear even a little heat, cold, hunger, and thirst for a single day now, how can we bear the heat and cold of hell, the hunger and thirst of the pretas, the exploitation of animals, and so on, the suffering of the lower realms that is long and unbearable? We should think deeply about this. Furthermore, if we are born in a happy realm through virtuous actions and enjoy the happiness of the heavens, is that enough? Just as fire, whether large or small, burns, wherever one is born in samsara, high or low, it is of the nature of suffering. Not only is the suffering of the three lower realms as unbearable as a pit of fire, but there is no happiness even in the heavens. Thus, even in the human realm, all, whether great or small, have their own suffering that is commensurate with their size, especially the common suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and poverty, bankruptcy, separation, beatings, killings, and so on, are inconceivable. The Asuras also, because they are jealous of the glory of others, are constantly fighting, conflicting, being wounded, having limbs severed, killing, and suffering defeat in battle.

etc., the suffering of strife is immeasurable. Even the gods of the desire realm are intoxicated by desire and, due to carelessness, experience the suffering of death and falling. They must experience the seven days of the gods like putting fish on hot sand, and there is also the suffering of strife, etc. In the two upper realms, there is no immediate torment of intense suffering, but there is the suffering of change. Just as a bird flying into the sky must eventually land on the ground, the power of contaminated virtue is exhausted, and one falls back into the lower realms, experiencing intense suffering. As it says in the 'Friendly Letter': 'The pleasures of the heavenly realms are very great, and having attained the bliss of detachment in the Brahma realm, one becomes firewood for the fires of Avici, constantly enduring suffering.' etc. Furthermore, the suffering of conditioned existence, which is universally pervasive, is like a giant performing illusions or consuming poisonous food. All conditioned things depend on causes and conditions, and therefore have the characteristic of constantly lacking autonomy, which is suffering. As it says in the 'Four Hundred Verses': 'Action is done through effort, and once done, it is destroyed without effort.' Thus it is said. Therefore, in this place of the three realms of samsara, whether born high or low, there is not even a moment's opportunity for happiness, like a patient constantly suffering from pain. Like a criminal escaping from prison, one must now resolve to be liberated from this, and thus generate genuine renunciation of samsara. As the great teacher said: 'Even if one strives in worldly affairs, there is no attainment; if one strives in Dharma, the means of livelihood are quickly achieved. Even if worldly affairs are good, they will ultimately decline; the fruit of practicing the sacred Dharma will never diminish. From beginningless time, the habits of karma and affliction have been habitually and continuously accumulated in the continuum. Therefore, controlled by their power, one wanders in the illusory samsara, and it is impossible to determine when one will be liberated. At the time of death, even if one remembers, it is completely forgotten, like medicine being useless when the head has already been severed. Therefore, having thoroughly understood the suffering of samsara, in order to correctly ascend the path of peace, cherish all beings with love and compassion, and cultivate emptiness and compassion in the continuum.' And, the words of the accomplished Melong: 'Contemplate the suffering of samsara! Enter into the excellent Dharma of the Three Jewels, so that human life can become meaningful!' etc. Having generated certainty about this, one should do.
