There are two preliminary practices. The first is: In a secluded place where meditation does not give rise to thorns, place a comfortable cushion, straighten the body, and calm the mind. First, exhale three times to clear away all diseases, evil spirits, and sins. It is said that this is like washing a vessel before pouring in the essence. Then, generate the intention to practice the profound path for the benefit of all sentient beings as vast as space. Visualize the lama above the crown of your head, and with immeasurable devotion, pray: Lama Rinpoche, the embodiment of all Buddhas of the three times, please bless my being. And so on, pray from the depths of your heart for what is desired. These are the practices that are done at the beginning of each meditation session as a way to start. The second is the preliminary practice of making the vessel of yoga suitable, which includes the common preliminary practices and the special close-taking preliminary practices for entering the generation and completion stages. The first is divided into two: common and uncommon. The first is, in the root text: First, contemplate the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, diligently meditate on impermanence and death, and contemplate the fruits of black and white karma, and the faults of samsara. In order to turn away from the wrong path, take refuge in the Three Jewels. With immeasurable compassion for beings as vast as space, generate the mind of enlightenment. The meaning is that there are six points to meditate on: contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, contemplating the impermanence of life, contemplating the way karma ripens, contemplating the faults of samsara, taking refuge as the foundation of the common vehicle, and the instructions for generating the mind of enlightenment as the root of the Great Vehicle. The first point is, in the Preliminary Key Instructions: First, contemplate well the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, and thereby generate certainty. Therefore, think like this: Now that I have obtained the great ship of leisure and endowment, which possesses a complete basis, I must liberate myself from the terrifying ocean of samsara. The reason is: Now I have obtained a precious human body, complete with the five senses, taken care of by a virtuous friend, encountered the teachings of the Buddha, have the freedom to practice the Dharma, and know how to practice. If I do not practice a genuine Dharma that will surely liberate me from samsara at this time, it will be difficult to obtain such a basis in the future, and it will be very rare to encounter the Dharma.

From the *Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life*: "This leisure is extremely difficult to find. Having obtained it, one can accomplish benefit and meaning. If one does not accomplish benefit in this life, how will one obtain this perfection in the future?" Why is it called "leisure"? If one is born in places of no leisure, one will be preoccupied with one's own evil deeds and have no time to practice Dharma. The three realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals are always tormented by suffering and have no leisure. The long-lived gods have no awareness of practicing Dharma, so the basis for hearing and thinking is blocked. These are the four external non-leisures. Even if one is born as a human, if one has no intention to enter the Dharma, like a barbarian; one who does not believe in karma and falls into the extreme of nihilistic views; a mute who has no ability to understand the meaning of words; and one who is born in a dark age where the Buddhas do not appear, and does not even hear the name of the Three Jewels, these four are the internal non-leisures. I am satisfied that I have not been born in any of these eight places, and I rejoice in having obtained these eight leisures, and I will strive to practice Dharma. Moreover, I have the ten endowments for practicing Dharma perfectly. I have obtained the human body, which is the basis for gods and humans to practice Dharma; I have the five senses complete, which are the basis for hearing and thinking; I was born in the central region where the Dharma abides; the gate to enter the Dharma is faith, and I have faith in what is worthy of faith, and I have not followed the inverted views of non-Buddhists; I have not inverted karma, and I have all the favorable conditions for the path. These are the five self-endowments. The appearance of a Buddha in the world is rarer than the udumbara flower, and now the Buddha has appeared in the world and taught the supreme Dharma that leads to liberation. His teachings still exist while they have not yet disappeared, so there are still individuals who follow him in practice. He is also able to embrace others with compassion. These are the five other-endowments. This pure basis with eighteen leisures and endowments is like the great teacher said: "Difficult to find again and again like the udumbara flower, obtaining it is meaningful like a wish-fulfilling jewel." As it is said, it is very difficult to obtain except for this opportunity, and once obtained, there is no better basis for practicing Dharma than this, so it has great meaning. Chandra Gomi said: "The basis for the Sugata's path, who sets out to lead beings, is obtained by the mighty-minded human,\
