If even the last of the faculties cannot generate samadhi, then, one should fix the mind on a support with characteristics: In front of oneself, at a suitable distance, one should firmly place an image, letters, a branch, a pebble, or whatever is appropriate. One should focus on the guru yoga, and rest for a while in the state of inseparability of the guru and one's own mind. Then, straighten the body, expel the stale air, and with eyes half-open, just look at the object of focus, and together with exhaling, mix the mind, eyes, and air with the object of focus and rest. In that state, if one recognizes that conceptual thoughts are moving like waves, one should suddenly arise, sharply recognize, and completely cut them off, and only establish the mind in equanimity as the path to be cultivated. By repeatedly familiarizing oneself in this way, it is impossible not to generate samadhi. In all these cases, to counteract laziness that is not pleased with meditation, one should train in the essence of effort, the special feature of desire, the cause of faith, and the result of perfect pliancy. To counteract forgetting the instructions, one should rely on mindfulness that does not forget the object of focus. In particular, to counteract sinking and excitement, if sinking, direct the gaze upwards, exhale vigorously, make awareness active, and make the behavior cool; if excited, lower the gaze, make the breath flow slowly, relax the body and mind, and make the behavior warm. To counteract the mixture of sinking and excitement, one should strongly rely on the mindfulness that does not intentionally create sinking and excitement. To counteract the inability to abide peacefully due to excessive intentionality and effort, one should expand with equanimity. In this way, by properly relying on the antidotes that eliminate the faults of samadhi, one can make the mind focused on one point inwardly, abide constantly without being controlled by conceptual thoughts, and if the mind is distracted to other objects, one should pull it back to the root object and abide. In that state, one should abide with mindfulness guarding it closely, approaching stability. If it is still distracted, one should subdue the mind with joy in the qualities of samadhi, think about the faults of desire and pacify the mind in the state of samadhi, and if sinking and excitement arise involuntarily, one should pacify them with various methods. Just by focusing the mind on the object, one can naturally enter meditation and become a single continuum, and by familiarizing oneself with this, no matter how long
