It is necessary. If in this life, one encounters a noble lama and profound instructions, and practices them, one can sever the bardo, and it will also release the yogi's bodily constraints. Thus, to sever the three bardos, there are three pith instructions. First, to blend samsara and nirvana into one. Second, to distinguish the head and tail of matter and awareness. Third, to cut the connection between buddhas and sentient beings. Among these three, the first, blending samsara and nirvana into one, is: By leaving one's own mind uncorrupted by conditions, resting in its own place, one should recognize this as the nature of reality, primordially empty, pure from the beginning, and naturally clear. This is naturally abiding, not something initially fabricated. The wisdom of non-duality in the minds of the buddhas, the awareness of sentient beings, the mind of enlightenment, one's own unfabricated awareness, etc., are understood as not being different entities but as being one, inseparable and non-distinct. When self-knowing, self-purifying, self-illuminating awareness, uncorrupted by conceptual thought, is not distracted and is accustomed to for a long time, and the essence abides in an unfabricated state and is clear, then samsara and nirvana are blended into one. Having such realization and conviction, there is no need to hope for buddhas above. By blending with dharma and mind, the unfabricated awareness abides in its own natural state, so there is no fear of falling into the lower realms below, this is blending samsara and nirvana into one. Second, distinguishing the head and tail of matter and awareness is: Although the body is the support of the mind, when awareness abides in the empty and clear nature of reality, whatever appears in the external field of perception, whether enemies, friends, or enjoyments, is without grasping, so appearances are empty in their own place. In between, one's own body is also without grasping, so one does not feel the existence of the body. Internally, the mind is also without grasping, conceptual thoughts subside in their own place. When there is no clinging or attachment to anything, the awareness of dharmata is continuous, so although the body remains human, the mind is equal to the mind of the buddhas. Without cherishing the material body, awareness abides in self-illumination, this is distinguishing the head and tail of matter and awareness. Third, cutting the connection between buddhas and sentient beings is: On the empty, unfabricated mind, buddhas and sentient beings are not established. By practicing in this way, one gains a decisive conviction and understanding, so there is no fear of the suffering of samsara and birth and death. At the time of death, the body is abandoned and speech ceases, but awareness abides in its own place. That blending of awareness and emptiness is not harmed by external conditions.

Da. The rope of samsara is cut, so the cause of being born into the six realms cannot be found. Hundreds of conceptual plays are contained within a moment of awareness. In the state of the empty clarity of dharmata, the poison of afflictions cannot arise. The fruition of karma is exhausted, so sins are swept away with a broom. Because there is no grasping onto the body, the door to the lower realms is closed. Because phenomenal existence is known to be mind, hell is completely emptied. For a person who practices this instruction in this way, there is no fear of death. One lifetime accomplishes the ultimate goal. Because the instruction of non-duality of samsara and nirvana is an instruction that uses three words to counteract birth and death, it is a profound secret path of secret mantra, so practice it! Secondly, the instruction on how to look at a mirror and introduce it is the teaching on the mirror. When this self-aware bodhicitta is looked at with the mind, because it does not form into shapes, colors, directions, boundaries, or centers, all three places of origin, dwelling, and going are empty, and nothing is formed. Abiding free from partiality, but that emptiness is not without essence, but clear and transparent, like a mirror, do you see it? If you do not see it, then like discarding tattered clothes, abandon all attachments to worldly food, wealth, enemies, and friends. Even if you cherish the body, it is like a bird's nest on a rotten tree, so abandon cherishing attachment. Like a merchant seeking the path of happiness, harmonize body, speech, and mind, and seek the path of dharmata. Like a beautiful woman looking in a mirror, repeatedly look at your mind. When a thief comes from the village, investigate thoroughly within. Subdue the enemy when you recognize them, and from then on, close the door. Relax awareness and sleep. Looking at the mind in its unaltered state is knowing oneself. It is understanding and seeing the meaning of dharmata. It is settling into the true nature. It is cutting the bonds of knowable objects. Because the mind is not formed into a thing, it is self-born and self-abiding, transcending the extremes of permanence and annihilation, so there is no need to seek a Buddha from elsewhere, because the conceptualizations of grasping and being grasped are extinguished, so the unmade wisdom expands. Because there is no bad cause to abandon that causes one to go to the lower realms, awareness abides in its own place. Because there is no maker or thing to be done in dharma, dharmata is naturally clear. Because the view is within oneself, there is no need to seek it from elsewhere, when one understands that meaning and practices it. One's own body is the place of a mountain hermitage. Whatever arises in external appearances is all appearance-emptiness, self-born, self-pacified, and free from the extremes of elaboration. Knowing this, appearances dissolve.
