Having entered the base, cultivate the nature of equanimity, clarity, emptiness, and non-grasping. The general meaning of what was said is that, in general, after first prioritizing calm abiding, one ultimately cuts off the attachment of searching for the mind, and seeks the view from the perspective of meditation; or, first searching for the mind and then settling into calm abiding, seeking meditation from the perspective of the view, these are the two methods. Here, it is according to the former method, so first seeking the view from the perspective of meditation is to gradually train in all of the above mind-holdings. In the practice of the lamas, at this time, one relies on objects such as pebbles, wood, and branches to hold the mind, or one leaves it uncorrected without an object, and so on. Through various methods, calm abiding is the basis of meditation, so one must settle into it. Moreover, this is not like a meditation that blocks thoughts, but is for the sake of cutting off the root. As it says in the guidance text of Kadag: Thereafter, in a great solitary place, body, speech, and mind should be firm. Until that time, the actions of the five poisons, whatever is done or thought is habit. Like a flower carried away by frost, do not follow after, cut off the connection. After that time, the actions of the five poisons, whatever is done or thought is affliction. Like a halter lost to the enemy, do not think, leave it as you please. Now the clear awareness is not yet open, dull and dark is ignorance. Doubt and hesitation are thoughts, the brother of thought is the enemy of view. Uncorrected, unmade, in its own place, do not do anything in the mind, realize appearance as emptiness, and realize emptiness as appearance, realize appearance and emptiness as inseparable, until you realize that Buddha and sentient beings are inseparable, rely on solitude. Those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties, by meditating for seven, three, or twenty-one days, generate diligence by the arising of the four experiences. And as Guru Padmasambhava bestowed in supplication to the monk Namkhai Nyingpo: Thus, in the mind, Whatever thoughts of the five poisons arise in the realm of the mind, do not transform them with thoughts of welcoming them in advance or judging them afterwards. By leaving the arising in its own place, it is liberated into the Dharmakaya. Thus, it is necessary to meditate, and therefore it is also necessary to give different instructions according to the types of individuals, distinguishing between sudden breakthrough, gradual, and sudden enlightenment, so there is no contradiction in relying on objects such as pebbles, wood, and branches. However, since all of the above mind-holdings are only dependent on an object, it is fine even without the elaboration of pebbles, wood, and branches, without an object.

It is only in accordance with the scriptures. Sit in the seven-point posture, relax the mind, and rest in equanimity. Because the thoughts of the six consciousnesses are very strong for beginners. Due to external causes, the habitual tendencies of the five poisons of the mind arise clearly, do not chase after these thoughts, and do not welcome future thoughts. For the present consciousness, without distinguishing between purity and impurity, like being stirred by a turbid river, being in a state of darkness, recognize it with the awareness of mindfulness, and in the manner of completely cutting off spontaneously arising thoughts, let the nature of whatever arises be self-arising and self-liberating. For beginners, thoughts arise like water flowing down a steep mountain, but do not regard it as a fault, recognize it. After a while, the flow gradually weakens, and the time of abiding increases. When subtle flows cannot be completely eradicated, and a good thought of "abiding" arises, it will be like a cessation of calm abiding, therefore it is important to recognize the three flows of coarse, subtle, and minute, and let them arise and liberate naturally. Guru Padmasambhava said to Princess Kharchen, in the profound teachings of primordial purity, the ten key points: "Attachment to the stake that binds the mind does not lead to liberation; stroking the head with calm abiding does not find the path to liberation." Therefore, after practicing in this way, the way the four experiences arise is: In the self-knowing and self-illuminating of primordial purity, it is said: "Phenomena are recognized as emptiness; emptiness is recognized as phenomena; phenomena and emptiness are recognized as inseparable; Buddhas and sentient beings are recognized as inseparable; realizing this truth, wisdom arises." Even if it arises in this way, there is a need for contentment and non-attachment. As mentioned above: "If you are content with the appearance of the four experiences, that is the view of a child; for phenomena and emptiness, there needs to be no attachment." Therefore, the method of eliminating obstacles for such practice is: In the root text it is said: "The method to eliminate external obstacles, visualize the Guru on the crown of the head; at dawn, sing the song of light of the Hum syllable; the Guru's mind and one's own consciousness merge." In general, as a method of eliminating external obstacles, keep the body upright and the eyes fixed on the sky. In the state of unconditioned consciousness, visualize above the crown of your head, the Guru appearing in the form of Wrathful Vajra. In the manner of supplication, sing the song of light of the seven-tiered Hum syllable with intense devotion, thereby generating the experience of faith.
