One should search for the mind by relying on investigation. That is, placing awareness in a state of general infusion, it is good to abide in that state. If thoughts are scattered and erratic, erupting suddenly, then that thought that arises suddenly, where does it arise from in the beginning? Where does it abide now? Where does it cease in the end? Look with singular investigation. Moreover, who is the agent of happiness and suffering, such as the one who grows upwards and the one who wanders downwards in samsara? If you think that is the mind, then does that mind have a beginning, an end, and a middle? Is the mind itself a thing or a non-thing? If it is existent, then what is its shape, color, and so on? If you think it is non-existent, then is it nothing at all, or what is it like? Ask again and again, and without letting it escape, let it be observed. If you cling to the belief that "it is such a thing," or speculate that "it is an empty nothingness," or because you have not found it, you cannot decide whether "it is something that does not exist at all, or whether it is more likely to exist but you have not found it," then continue to let it search and ask. The object of observation and the observer, the object of seeing and the seer, etc., are not seen at all. Searching and examining, nothing is found, like looking at the expanse of the sky and seeing nothing. This appearance and awareness, devoid of self-identification, naked, unspeakable, unthinkable, unseeable, if a clear and empty, objectless awareness arises, if you have understood the instructions, then you should cultivate it in that state, without abandoning or establishing anything. As it says in the *All-Creating King Tantra*: "Because the mind cannot look at the mind, and looking does not see it, leave it as it is." And as it says in the *Boundless Bliss Sutra*: "The nature of mind, without a root, cannot be found by searching, without self-identification, the state of emptiness as it is, in its natural state, inexpressible, self-born wisdom." And as the great teacher Garab Dorje said: "The nature of mind is primordially Buddha; the mind has no arising or ceasing, like the sky; having realized the true meaning of the equality of all phenomena; if you leave it without searching, that is meditation." That is, in equipoise, without corrupting the naked wisdom of awareness and emptiness with clinging, let it loosen into self-clarity and vastness, and in post-meditation, determine that all appearances are like the illusion of a magical display or the appearance of a dream, clear and empty, without grasping, and take it as the path. The wisdom of equipoise, free from elaboration, is the root.
