This shows that clinging to the nature of the skandhas (Tibetan: ཕུང་པོ།, Meaning: skandha, aggregates) as self and what belongs to self exists, but not to external forms (Tibetan: གཟུགས།, Meaning: rūpa, form) and so on. If one thinks that the person and the skandhas are one and the same, that is also incorrect. Because the person is not the nature of the skandhas such as form, and the characteristics of the skandhas and the person are not consistent. The skandhas such as form are impermanent and momentary; while those who believe that the person exists by its own nature consider the person to be permanent and singular. Innate clinging also perceives the skandhas and the person as having different characteristics. Because people recognize what they saw in the past in the present, they perceive it as permanent; and they also perceive that only one person is born when the world is born. The Root Wisdom says: 'If the skandhas were the self, then it would be subject to birth and death; if it were other than the skandhas, then it would lack the characteristics of the skandhas.' If one cannot tolerate the reasoning that refutes the identity and difference of the skandhas, and believes that there exists something that can neither be said to be the same nor different, that is also incorrect. Because it is impossible for there to be a real thing of a person that can neither be said to be the same as nor different from the skandhas. Because for a real thing, there is nothing other than the aspects of a single substance and different substances. Why single out the skandhas as the object of refutation to refute the self-existent person? Because the skandhas themselves are the basis for mistaking them as 'I'. If one cannot find the 'I' after examining the skandhas, then there is no opportunity to find the 'I'. The second point is that, because the 'I' cannot be found by examining the skandhas, it should be recognized that the worldly 'I' and 'mine' are false and are mistaken cognitions. One should avoid this mistaken cognition as one would avoid a lost person who has strayed into enemy territory. Second, separately contemplating the selflessness of phenomena (Tibetan: ཆོས་ལ་བདག་མེད།, Meaning: dharmānairātmya, dharma-selflessness) is divided into two parts: contemplating that form (Tibetan: གཟུགས་ཅན།, Meaning: rūpin, having form) does not exist, and contemplating that consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ།, Meaning: vijñāna, consciousness) does not exist. First, in order to contemplate the selflessness of phenomena after contemplating the selflessness of the person (Tibetan: གང་ཟག་གི་བདག་མེད།, Meaning: pudgalanairātmya, person-selflessness), one should investigate. What is the object of investigation? Not only the person, but also all phenomena such as form. What is the manner of investigation? Are the phenomena that appear as form truly existing apart from the mind, or is it merely that the mind, under the influence of habit (Tibetan: བག་ཆགས།, Meaning: vāsanā, habit), appears as form and so on, like the appearances in a dream state?

After such investigation, these appearances of forms and so on are analyzed with discriminating wisdom, becoming finer and finer until the ultimate limit of minute particles. When these minute particles are examined separately by parts, they cannot be found. When not even a small amount of form can be found in this way, the mind is turned away from contemplating whether these forms and so on exist by their own nature or have become non-existent. Then, what appears as different from the mind externally? Since the three realms are not established as different from the mind, one should realize that only the mind appears as real, and it is not other than the mind. One should investigate in this way. Only the mind appears as real, but it is not real in reality. As it is said in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: 'Substance' and so on, up to 'arise' and so on. The meaning of this is: The substance that appears as real should be analyzed down to minute particles, and one should realize that even minute particles cannot be found. Having realized this, do not conceptualize form as true.' Thus, it is advised. Then, what is this that appears as real? It is established as only mind. The appearance is only mind, but this is not realized by those with wrong views. Second, realizing that consciousness is not established is divided into two: explaining in detail the method of investigation and summarizing the result of valid cognition. First: The yogi thinks like this: From beginningless time, the mind itself, due to clinging to appearances as real, to forms and so on that are not truly existent, appears to children as forms and so on, just as forms and so on appear in dreams. Although the way they appear is different, they are established as mind. Therefore, the three realms are only mind. One should contemplate in this way. Having realized that all external imputations are only mind, the yogi then examines that mind individually with reason. One should examine the nature of all objects of grasping and the grasper individually with reason. Thinking in this way, one examines the nature of the mind individually with reason. How does one examine? The yogi examines the mind in this way: If one examines with ultimate truth or reason, the mind is only an appearance in name, and from the beginning, it is unborn like an illusion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
