When various appearances of external objects manifest, if analyzed with reason, since the mind is not separate from the false nature of the external object, therefore, how could the mind itself be truly established, just like the forms and so on that are negated? How to understand it? Because each appearance of form and so on is composite, it is a variety of appearances. To consider it as a single appearance is also a variety, so like the nature of a variegated cloth, it is not truly one. For each form, one cannot find a true singularity, so it is not truly a multiple nature. Because if there is no one, the pervaded multiple cannot be established. Just like this example, since the mind is not separate from the false appearance, therefore, by the same reasoning, the mind is also not truly one and multiple in nature. This is observation through reasoning that separates one and many. Furthermore, if one examines the aspects of the mind's arising and ceasing with reason, they cannot be found. When it appears that the mind arises, if examined, it does not come from anywhere. When it appears that the mind ceases, if examined, it does not go anywhere. If there is no mind as a basis, how can there be arising and ceasing as characteristics? If it is said that because it arises dependent on the preceding object, it is not that one cannot find where it comes from, this is unreasonable. Because in the ultimate truth, it should not arise from both self and other. This is the meaning that, when examined with the reasoning of the Vajra Splinter, not only form but also mind should not truly arise. In the Prajnaparamita, it is also said: 'Form does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Feeling does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Perception does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere,' and so on. Second, summarizing the result of valid cognition: When examined with the reasoning of separating one and many and the Vajra Splinter, it cannot be found. Therefore, the mind is like an illusion, falsely established. Just as the mind is false, so too are all phenomena such as cessation and nirvana like illusions, false. In the ultimate truth, if analyzed with reason, one should contemplate that both the object, form, etc., and the subject, consciousness, are unborn. If one examines whether the truth of cessation and nirvana are true or false, because one must admit that they are false, therefore, from the perspective of ultimate reason, they are conventional truths. The sutra says: 'The truth of cessation is like a dream, nirvana is said to be like a dream.'
