Therefore, when a yogi realizes that these three yogas (the grasper, the grasped, and the habits that bind the two) are without inherent existence, he enters into the signless yoga. Furthermore, when a yogi realizes that the object, the subject, and the antidote that cuts off the attachment to the object are also without inherent existence, he cuts off all the elaborations of clinging to signs, and thus enters into the signless yoga. The fourth point is that this treatise teaches as follows: If wisdom does not engage in detailed analysis, then it will not become a cause for entering into the signless yoga. Fifth, to summarize the results of this section: Not only external objects, but when the nature of the dharmas of the mind is analyzed in detail with wisdom of ultimate truth, if the mind that is the basis is not found, then one will not cling to the distinctions of existence or non-existence. Because the object to be refuted does not exist, the negation of the object to be refuted will not become an object of consciousness. For example, if one analyzes that the object to be refuted does not exist, then this negation will not appear as an object of analytical wisdom at any time. If the object to be refuted does not exist, then why does its negation not become an object of consciousness? If, through rational analysis, one can see something that needs to be refuted, then in order to refute it, one will analyze with consciousness 'this thing does not exist'. However, when a yogi analyzes in detail with discriminating wisdom, if the object to be refuted is not found, then how can one analyze 'in order to refute this dharma, it does not exist'? As stated in the *Two Truths*: 'Because there is no object to be refuted, in reality there is no negation.' And as stated in the *Refutation of Disputes*: 'Because there is not the slightest object to be refuted, I do not negate anything, therefore, you say that I negate, this is your own slander.' In short, if there is no dharma to be refuted, then what dharma will become the dharma of negation? When analyzing, if both the object to be refuted and the negation do not appear before consciousness, then this person will not generate other conceptual thoughts, because the realization of the non-existence of the object to be refuted and its negation pervades all conceptual thoughts, and if the pervading conceptual thought does not exist, then the pervaded conceptual thought will also not exist. As stated in the *Entering the Bodhisattva's Way*: 'When neither real nor unreal, abide before the mind, then since there are no other τρόπος (Tibetan, Devanagari, t τρόπος, method), signless peace is most manifest.' Therefore, in order to realize emptiness, if the clinging to both real and unreal does not exist, then elaboration will cease. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One enters into the non-conceptual state of realizing emptiness. One does not abide in the manner of clinging to the five skandhas (aggregates) such as form. Because one investigates with discriminating wisdom and realizes that the essence of all phenomena is imperceptible, that yogi is also called a meditator with supreme wisdom. Third, regarding the order of how to meditate, there are five points: First, the manner of settling the mind; second, entering with focused attention; third, being interrupted by thoughts; then, entering without interruption; and finally, entering spontaneously. The first point is: The yogi, as previously explained, has entered into the realization of the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, therefore, there is nothing else to be examined in his presence. Since there is no analysis of objects and no expression of words, one naturally enters into a state of realizing emptiness, and since there is no obvious effort to subdue sinking and excitement. The yogi should clearly grasp the truth with wisdom and enter effortlessly. The second point is: While abiding in the state of realizing emptiness with wisdom, one should also focus and not let the mind wander to other objects. The third point is entering with interruption by thoughts, which has five points: Restoring mindfulness when distracted, increasing strength when stable, Dispelling distraction, eliminating dullness, and eliminating excitement. The first point is: When, during the period of meditating on samadhi, one sees that the mind is outwardly distracted due to some circumstances, one should examine the nature of the object that is focused on, pacify the outwardly distracted mind, and then again place the mind on that same object. The second point is increasing strength when stable: When one sees that one is not interested in the object of samadhi and does not want to meditate on samadhi, this is because one does not understand the qualities of samadhi. Therefore, by seeing and understanding the benefits of samadhi, such as clairvoyance and direct perception arising, in order to enter into samadhi, one should cultivate joy in the object of samadhi. The third point is dispelling distraction: Another antidote is to recognize that distraction of the mind to other things is a fault, and in order to pacify this distraction, one should thoroughly pacify the displeasure with the object of samadhi. The fourth point is eliminating dullness: If, while meditating on samadhi, the samadhi --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
