By cultivating samadhi, one obtains the benefit of thorough refinement. The object of samadhi is mindfulness, the antidote to unfavorable conditions is discriminating awareness, the antidote to dullness and agitation is mental engagement, and when free from dullness and agitation, the mind should be kept in a state of equanimity. First, faith, aspiration, and the like are the antidotes to laziness, which makes one unwilling to cultivate samadhi. Because they dispel aversion to samadhi. The way they become antidotes is as follows: Through faith, the yogi develops a desire for samadhi. What is faith? Faith is the nature of complete trust in the qualities of samadhi. Having developed the aspiration to cultivate samadhi, one will want to cultivate samadhi, thereby initiating diligence in entering samadhi. After initiating diligence, one makes body and mind workable by relying on diligence. After body and mind become workable, one becomes very willing to cultivate samadhi by obtaining great refinement of body and mind. Therefore, laziness can be dispelled. Because it dispels laziness, one should cultivate faith and the like when cultivating samadhi. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of samadhi, because it does not forget the object of samadhi. Discriminating awareness is the antidote to both dullness and agitation, because discriminating awareness recognizes dullness and agitation and thus engages in abandoning them. When dullness and agitation have not subsided, it is also a fault not to strive to counteract dullness and agitation, therefore, one should cultivate the mental engagement that is the antidote to dullness and agitation. When cultivating samadhi, if dullness and agitation are completely pacified and the mind is no longer controlled by dullness and agitation but becomes calm, then striving to counteract unfavorable conditions is also a fault, because striving when it is not necessary will cause the mind to be distracted. Therefore, at that time, one should cultivate the absence of antidotes and the mind abiding in equanimity. What is the fault of striving for antidotes when there is no dullness and agitation? When the mind enters equally without dullness and agitation, if one strives for antidotes in order to eliminate dullness and agitation, then the state of samadhi without dullness and agitation will be interrupted, and thus... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the mind wanders elsewhere, then, if one thinks that one should not strive to eliminate laxity and excitement, if the mind falls into laxity or excitement while practicing meditation, if one does not strive to counteract laxity and excitement, then, because there is no clear seeing of the object with higher vision, like a blind person, one has no power to focus on the target, and the mind will fall into laxity. Therefore, in the process of practicing meditation, if laxity and excitement occur, this is a fault. Therefore, one should eliminate discouragement, calm excitement, not fall into either laxity or excitement, maintain the mind's equanimity, and let it go. After the mind abides in equanimity, the yogi who practices meditation should not do other things as long as he is practicing meditation, but only focus on practicing, thinking about the two reasons for selflessness. Fourth, the order of alternating between meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment, and the necessity of engaging in both meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. There are three stages in learning to alternate between meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment: viewing phenomena as illusory with wisdom, viewing sentient beings with compassion, and summarizing the meaning. First, if prolonged meditation causes harm due to physical and mental fatigue, then temporarily suspend the session of meditative equipoise and occasionally use the wisdom that individually examines the ends of the world to investigate. Although things appear to come and go, they have no inherent nature, like illusory horses and cattle; although they appear to be different from consciousness, they are not different, like dreams; although they appear to be of that essence, they are not established as such, like the moon in water; although they appear to be of that shape, they are not established as that shape, like eye floaters. As it is also stated in the *Entering the Undifferentiated Dharani*: 'With the wisdom of supramundane equipoise, one sees all phenomena as being like the center of the sky, without focusing on any characteristics of compounded phenomena, and equally sees them as being of one taste in emptiness.' The subsequent attainment of pure worldly wisdom sees things as illusions, mirages, and the moon in water. Second, viewing sentient beings with compassion: Having realized that all beings are like illusions, as shown above, generate great compassion focused on sentient beings, and think the following: Not seeing the true meaning, pitiable is the mind of childish beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
