Those who, not realizing the profound Dharma, that all dharmas are empty of their own nature from the very beginning, instead superimpose upon the peaceful dharmas from the beginning, assuming they have inherent existence, etc., thus turning their minds away from the true nature. Because of this, they accumulate various kinds of karma and afflictions in their mindstream. Therefore, they transmigrate through samsara, taking birth after birth. Therefore, I must, by all means, enable these beings to comprehend such profound Dharma and establish them in non-abiding nirvana. One should think in this way. Having rested from such thought, again, as before, enter into the samadhi where all dharmas do not appear. Again, even if arising from the samadhi of equipoise, rest for a while and enter as before. Third, summarizing the meaning: With such a sequence of alternatingly training in shamatha and vipashyana, one should remain for an hour, or half a shiel-tsé, or one shiel-tsé, or as long as one is able. Fifth, entering into the union of shamatha and vipashyana: After equipoise, if one wishes to arise from that samadhi, without breaking the lotus position, one should think from below as follows: These inner and outer dharmas, although unborn in ultimate truth, in conventional truth, like illusions, due to the power of the accumulation of various specifically determined causes and cooperative conditions, if not examined with reason, various pleasing appearances will arise. Performing virtuous actions will produce pleasing results, performing non-virtuous actions will produce displeasing results, etc., because one clearly sees the specifically determined results. Therefore, one will not fall into nihilism, nor will one fall into the extreme of superimposition. For if one analyzes in detail with the wisdom that discriminates ultimate truth, no dharma is found, because if examined with reason, no dharma can be said to exist in reality. Therefore, one will not fall into the extreme of eternalism and superimposition. Sixth, the practice of training in the two accumulations: The practice of training in the two accumulations has two aspects: first, directly showing the practice, and second, citing the scriptural authority as evidence. First, training in the two accumulations, for those who lack the eye of discriminating wisdom, thus turning their minds away from reality, and who manifestly cling to the self of persons and the self of phenomena, thus creating virtue and non-virtue --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who act in various ways wander completely in samsara. If some individuals do not single-mindedly work for the benefit of sentient beings in samsara, lack great compassion, and do not perfect the perfections such as generosity with the desire to attain Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings, but only tame their own minds, then those sentient beings, because they lack the means to attain perfect enlightenment, will fall into the enlightenment of the Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Those individuals who, with discriminating wisdom, understand that beings are without inherent existence, but in conventional terms, with the power of generating great compassion for beings who have not realized emptiness, vow to liberate all beings from the ocean of suffering, and like a magician who understands that illusions appear but have no inherent nature, without their intelligence being perverted, completely accumulate vast collections of merit and wisdom, those individuals, having attained the state of the Tathagatas, accomplish all forms of benefit and happiness for all beings in samsara and remain until samsara is empty. 2-57 Those Bodhisattvas who train in both skillful means and wisdom, through the power of the accumulation of wisdom, realize that samsara is without inherent existence, and therefore, having abandoned all defilements, they do not fall into samsara. Because they look upon all sentient beings with great compassion, and through the power of accumulating vast and immeasurable collections of merit, having attained the two form bodies, they benefit sentient beings, and therefore, they do not fall into the extreme of nirvana either. Because they benefit sentient beings, they also become the close support of all sentient beings. Having obtained the results of the two accumulations—the Dharmakaya for one's own benefit and the Rupakaya for the benefit of others—and since the benefit of others arises from this, therefore, those who desire to bring future benefit and present happiness to all sentient beings, and who desire to attain the fruit of non-abiding nirvana, should, at all times and in all circumstances, with respect and constant diligence, strive to accumulate vast collections of merit and wisdom. This is what I think. Second, quoting the scriptures as proof: The path of accumulating the two accumulations is unerring, and thus, in the secret sutra of the Tathagatas, it was also taught: 2-58 Through the accumulation of wisdom, all defilements will be abandoned. Through the accumulation of merit, all sentient beings will be supported. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
