Because the movement of the mind is extremely unclear, 2-46 When one sees the mind becoming dull or suspects dullness, in order to pacify it, one should focus on extremely pleasing objects, such as the form of the Buddha, or contemplate the meaning of the Tathagata's teachings, thereby generating the concept of the light of Dharma in the mind. By this, one pacifies temporary distractions, and then again firmly grasps the object in its true nature. What kind of dullness needs to be eliminated? When a yogi sees nothing, like a blind person, or when the object is unclear, like a person entering darkness, or when the conditions for a clear object are not complete, like someone closing their eyes, and thus one cannot grasp the true nature very clearly, then one should recognize that the mind is dull. What is the fault of dullness? One should know that in the state of dullness, there is no vipashyana (insight) to counteract obscurations. Fifth, counteracting agitation: If, while practicing samadhi, desire arises for objects previously experienced, so that the mind temporarily becomes agitated towards other objects, or if one suspects agitation, one should contemplate impermanence and suffering, etc., which cause aversion, thereby pacifying the fault of samadhi—agitation. 2-47 Fourth, entering without interruption: After pacifying dullness and agitation, one should strive to enter the two truths of selflessness without relying on effort and manifest fabrication. So, what kind of agitation needs to be eliminated? When the mind is distracted by various objects, behaving like a monkey, not staying still for even a moment, but scattering to various objects, then one should recognize that the mind is agitated. What is the fault of that? One should know that at that time there is no shamatha (calm abiding). Fifth, entering spontaneously: If, while practicing samadhi, because one is free from the faults of samadhi—dullness and agitation—the mind neither falls into dullness nor falls into agitation, but remains evenly, and the mind enters the object effortlessly and naturally, thereby causing the true nature of the mind to appear very clearly, then one should relax the effort to counteract dullness and agitation, and practice with the mind in a state of equanimity. When the mind does not fall into dullness and agitation, but enters the object clearly and evenly, then one should know that the path of combining shamatha and vipashyana has been accomplished. 2-48 The practice of vipashyana --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The method of practicing Shamatha has been shown. Third, there are two aspects to cultivating the path of union: correcting the faults of imbalance and the method of cultivating balance. The first part has two aspects: a brief explanation and a detailed explanation. First, when a yogi cultivates Samadhi, if they emphasize the cultivation of Vipassanā (insight), resulting in wisdom becoming excessively strong, then because the power of Shamatha (tranquility) is weak, like placing a candle in a windy place, the mind will shake violently and will not be able to see the meaning of reality clearly, because the mind's focus on the object is weak. If the mind's focus is weak, one will not clearly understand the object. Therefore, at that time, one should cultivate Shamatha in order to continuously focus the mind on the object. If one emphasizes Shamatha too much, like a person overcome by sleep, one will also not be able to see reality clearly, because the wisdom that analyzes reality is weak. If wisdom is weak, one will not clearly understand reality. Therefore, one should again cultivate the wisdom that realizes emptiness. Second, the method of cultivating balance is: when cultivating Samadhi, for example, just as two yoked oxen proceed together with strength, similarly, when Shamatha and Vipassanā both proceed in equal measure, then as long as the body and mind are not harmed by fatigue from cultivating Samadhi, one should remain effortlessly in a natural state, without actively engaging in dispelling faults and without distraction. Eliminating the Faults of Samadhi Third, there are two aspects to eliminating the faults of Samadhi: identifying the faults and explaining the antidotes. First, in brief, in all stages of cultivating Samadhi, there are six faults to be eliminated: laziness in not wanting to engage in Samadhi, forgetting the object of meditation, dullness that makes the object unclear, agitation that makes the mind not focus on the object, not applying the antidote when dullness and agitation arise, and applying the antidote too much when there is no dullness or agitation. Second, as an antidote to these faults of Samadhi, one should cultivate eight activities that abandon faults. These eight are: having faith in the qualities of Samadhi, Having faith and then desiring to cultivate Samadhi, and desiring and then exerting effort to engage in cultivation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
