'O Bhagavan, it is indeed so. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should strive in the accumulation of the accumulations of merit and the accumulations of wisdom.' It also appears in the Sutra of the Birth of the Tathagata, from '...it is taught' to '...it appears extensively.' Its meaning is: The appearance of the Tathagatas does not arise from the sole cause of realizing emptiness. Why is that? O sons of the Victorious Ones, the Tathagatas are perfectly accomplished by immeasurable, countless, and hundreds of millions of causes. What are the ten? Namely, great compassion, generosity, and so forth, the accumulation of merit, and the realization of the sixteen emptinesses, and so forth, the immeasurable and insatiable accumulation of wisdom, the cause of perfect accomplishment, and so forth. It is also taught in the Holy Vimalakirti Sutra: 'O friends, the body of the Tathagata is necessarily born from a hundred merits, necessarily born from all virtuous dharmas, necessarily born from immeasurable virtuous actions,' and so forth, extensively taught. The main practice of shamatha and vipassana has been taught. The third, the activities to be accomplished in the post-meditation period, has two parts: accumulating merit by focusing on the object of support, and generally accumulating the two accumulations. The first is: Having accumulated the two accumulations in this way through both meditative equipoise and post-meditation, gently dismantle the lotus posture, and in the state of post-meditation conduct, pay homage with reverence and the five limbs to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions, make offerings of substances, body, speech, and mind to those Buddhas who are the object of focus, and offer praise with speech, and then make extensive aspirations such as the Holy Practice of Manjushri. The second is: After accumulating merit by focusing on the object of support, then strive to accumulate merit such as generosity, which is possessed of the wisdom of realizing emptiness and great compassion, and is dedicated to unsurpassed enlightenment. The methods of practicing shamatha and vipassana have been taught. Third, refuting the wrong views of others has two parts: First, establishing the initial position, and then stating the refutation. First, establishing the initial position: The method of practicing the path... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please explain, which knowledgeable person would say such a thing? He says: Sentient beings, due to the virtuous deeds of generating thoughts in their minds, experience the fruits of the heavenly realms and wander in samsara. Sentient beings, due to non-virtuous deeds, experience the fruits of the lower realms and wander in samsara. Those who do not engage in separate analysis and investigation, who do not think of anything, and who do not keep anything in mind, because the cause of their samsara—conceptualization—is severed, will be completely liberated from samsara. Because liberation from samsara comes from not keeping anything in mind, one should not think of anything. One should also not engage in generosity, keeping moral discipline, and other virtuous deeds. Why? Because generosity, moral discipline, and so on may lead to the attainment of the heavenly realms, but even the heavenly realms have not transcended samsara. Then, shouldn't generosity, keeping moral discipline, and so on be taught? Generosity, keeping moral discipline, and so on are taught only for the sake of preventing foolish people from falling into the lower realms. He thinks this way and speaks this way. These are the previous positions. Refutation: If one abandons skillful means and wisdom, one will abandon the Great Vehicle; advice against abandoning the Great Vehicle. The second part is refutation, which has seven points: abandoning skillful means and wisdom leads to abandoning the Great Vehicle; advising against abandoning the Great Vehicle; refuting the rejection of discriminating wisdom; establishing discriminating wisdom as the root of the path; refuting the abandonment of virtuous conduct; refuting the misinterpretation of scriptural intent; and showing the nature of the Great Vehicle's path. The first point: rejecting generosity and other aspects of skillful means and discriminating wisdom is abandoning the entirety of the Great Vehicle. Why does this abandon the entirety of the Great Vehicle? Because the root of all vehicles is the Great Vehicle, so abandoning generosity and other aspects of skillful means and discriminating wisdom is abandoning all vehicles. How is the Great Vehicle the root of all vehicles? Because Buddhas arise in dependence on the Great Vehicle, and other vehicles of hearers and solitary realizers arise in dependence on the Buddhas. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: 'Hearers, middling Buddhas, all are born from the Powerful One.' Abandoning skillful means and wisdom leads to abandoning the Great Vehicle in this way. In meditative equipoise, one does not... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
