Then, this would lead to falling into it. If, without analyzing with the wisdom that examines the ultimate, without correctly distinguishing the reality of all phenomena, merely not attending to other aspects, there is no remembrance of the object. Without attending, there is no other means to realize, other than the discriminating wisdom. Second, if the meaning of emptiness is not realized, merely not attending, there is no remembrance of the object, even if one cultivates non-attention, if there is no correct discrimination through the wisdom that examines the ultimate, how can one enter the state of realizing the absence of inherent existence of all phenomena? If it is thought that because the object abides in emptiness, not attending to anything will lead to the realization of emptiness, then, Even if the internal and external phenomena have always abided in emptiness from the beginning, if there is no discrimination of the reality through the wisdom that examines the ultimate, merely not attending, the emptiness of those conventional phenomena such as form will not be realized. If emptiness is not realized, what fault is there? If the reality of all phenomena, emptiness, is not realized, the grasping at truth cannot be severed, and if the root, the grasping at truth, is not severed, the two obscurations will not be abandoned. If it is thought that even without realizing emptiness, there is no obstacle to abandoning the two obscurations, then, if it were the case that the obscurations could be abandoned without realizing emptiness, then all sentient beings would attain liberation at all times without needing to exert effort. Third, if there is no appearance of wisdom, if a yogi, due to forgetfulness or ignorance, does not allow the remembrance and attention to conventional phenomena to arise, and wants to attain non-conceptual wisdom, then, at the time of forgetfulness and ignorance, he is extremely ignorant of the reality of the object, how can such a person become a yogi who cultivates the reality of the object? If, without correctly discriminating the reality of all phenomena through wisdom, merely preventing the remembrance of the object and attention, and preventing feelings, the result of such habituation is the habituation of a foolish mind that knows nothing. Merely not remembering is not knowing anything, therefore, merely not attending will cause the appearance of correct wisdom to be extended far away. If it is thought that merely not attending is neither forgetfulness, nor the habituation of a foolish mind that knows nothing, but a special non-affirmative negation, then, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If so, when wishing to negate, in that case, if one does not correctly and individually examine the actual state, how can one be able to be without recollection of conventional objects and without mental engagement? Even when abiding in a mind of negation that is without mental engagement, even if one subsequently recollects the object, it is not permissible to say, 'Clearly recollecting, yet not recollecting; clearly seeing, yet not seeing.' Fourth, if previous states cannot be remembered, etc.: If one becomes accustomed to being without recollection of objects and without mental engagement, then how can one attain the recollection of previous states, etc., and the powers of the Buddha (Skt: bala)? Certainly not, because abandoning the cause contradicts attaining the result. For example, when relying on cold touch, which contradicts warmth, the sensation of warm touch will not arise. Fifth, obscurations cannot be removed: When a yogi enters into meditative absorption, does the mind consciousness (Skt: vijñāna) exist or not? If the mind consciousness exists, then that mind must necessarily focus on some object, because the consciousness of ordinary beings, without obstructing the object, cannot suddenly focus without a reason. If one does not engage mentally with anything, because consciousness is prevented and there is no mind consciousness, then when there is no mind consciousness, how can one realize the selflessness (Skt: niḥsvabhāva) of phenomena? If one does not realize the selflessness of phenomena, what fault is there? Because one does not find the antidote to afflictions, with what antidote will one remove afflictions? It is also unreasonable to be without perception (Skt: saṃjñā) during meditation, because the mind of ordinary beings who have not attained the fourth dhyana cannot naturally cease or be prevented. In short, if one analyzes the actual state with the discriminating wisdom and realizes that one has not found any dharma, then one can be without recollection and without mental engagement; if one does not analyze with the discriminating wisdom, how can one do so? If there is no discriminating wisdom, one cannot realize the actual state of all dharmas, therefore there is no wisdom that realizes the actual state, and one cannot remove obscurations. That is the meaning. Establishing the Root of Discriminating Wisdom Fourth, establishing the root of discriminating wisdom has four points: the way it becomes the root of the path, proving it with scripture, refuting wrong views about vipashyana (Skt: vipaśyanā), and eliminating arguments that contradict scripture. First point: The sutra says: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
