Open the eye of wisdom that realizes enlightenment, and with the sword of wisdom that realizes emptiness, cut through the net of bondage that clings to the truth of persons and phenomena, defeat the enemies of afflictions, and abide in a state of fearlessness towards any opposing enemies. 2-75 This is able to resist due to the condition of view, obtain the confidence of realization, and make it impossible for the four maras to move like a mountain. One should not close the eye of wisdom as a coward sees an enemy. One should not remain merely in the state of gathering thoughts inward without examining the state of the dharmas of discriminating wisdom. The Holy Samadhiraja Sutra also taught that discriminating wisdom is necessary, from 'if' to 'arise'. Its meaning is: one should separately examine the selflessness of inner and outer dharmas with wisdom. If one separately examines those inner and outer dharmas with wisdom and attains the meaning of finding the state of affairs, then the meditation of finding the state of affairs with wisdom is the cause of attaining the fruit of nirvana. Other than the meditation of separately examining and finding the state of affairs, any meditation that does not separately examine will not attain nirvana, which is the pacification of the two obscurations. In the Sutra Collection compiled by the teacher Nagarjuna, it also says that discriminating wisdom is necessary, that is, when meditating on the non-conceptual wisdom of the main practice, one should enter into the application of vipassana, the discriminating wisdom, and then abide in vipassana. 2-76 For other practitioners who wish to practice the path, if they do not enter into the application of vipassana, the discriminating wisdom that separately examines the state of affairs of the dharmas, then that is the work of Mara. This clearly shows that the discriminating wisdom gathered by thought is the application of vipassana. Third, refuting the wrong view of the nature of vipassana: If it is said that because there is no need to think or remember the state of affairs of the dharmas, then is it vipassana to not think or remember anything? It is not so! The nature of vipassana is discriminating observation, as taught in the Holy Cloud of Jewels Sutra and the Explanation of the Thought-Determining Sutra. The Holy Cloud of Jewels Sutra also taught, from 'taught' to 'arise'. Its meaning is: with the vipassana that distinguishes dharmas, one should separately examine the inner and outer dharmas and understand their nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meditating after realizing the absence of inherent existence is to enter the realm of non-proliferation. This indicates that the essence of vipaśyanā (insight meditation) is the wisdom of discernment. It is also stated in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra* that the essence of vipaśyanā is the wisdom of discernment. 2-77 How is it understood? Mahāmati, if one examines closely with the wisdom of vipaśyanā, one will not recognize either the specific or the general characteristics. Because if one examines, one will not find any dharma. Therefore, all dharmas are without inherent existence. If the accurate and distinct discernment of the nature of dharmas by wisdom is not called vipaśyanā, then the Bhagavan's (Blessed One's) sutras quoted above state in various ways that vipaśyanā is the cause of accurate and distinct discernment, which would contradict those statements. If one does not wish for accurate and distinct discernment of dharmas, it contradicts many scriptures. Therefore, one should say, 'I am of little wisdom and little diligence, and I am unable to fully seek the vast scriptures.' Because the Bhagavan praised extensive learning, one should not abandon the distinct discernment of dharmas at any time. Fourth, refuting the argument that contradicts the scriptures: In the *Brahma's Inquiry Sutra*, it is also stated, 'Meditate without conceptualizing, without examining with wisdom.' 2-78 'Those who contemplate inconceivable dharmas and engage in existence and non-existence are not engaging in proper conduct.' Therefore, without prior discernment, one meditates without conceptualizing. If it is said that, then those who impute a nature of arising to dharmas that have not truly or ultimately arisen, like the Śrāvakas (Hearers) and other Tirthikas (non-Buddhists), who truly think of forms and other dharmas as impermanent and suffering, truly imputing the contaminated aggregates of form and so on as real, and who, at the time of nirvāṇa, deny that the aggregates previously held to exist by nature do not exist, these thoughts engage in the extreme of nihilism, and therefore become improper thoughts. Therefore, in order to refute these views, those words were spoken in the sutra, not to refute the accurate and distinct discernment of the nature of things. When entering yoga, one must distinctly discern the true meaning with wisdom. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
