Q: Isn't it said that one should meditate in a way that is without mindfulness and without attention? A: If one thinks that discriminating wisdom is not needed, there will be many faults. Therefore, in the holy Dharma, that is, in the Sutras, it says to meditate without mindfulness and without attention, that is also during the time of application, it should be regarded as being done on the authority of correct individual discrimination going before. What is the reason? Because for the object of negation, the phenomena of grasping and being grasped, only with the correct individual discrimination of wisdom can one realize that there is no basis for consciousness, thereby being able to achieve no mindfulness and no attention. Otherwise, it is not just by not paying attention. Thus, when a yogi examines the state of affairs of phenomena, if he examines carefully with correct wisdom, at the time when he does not see any arising or ceasing of phenomena in the three times, since no object to be remembered and no object to be attended to are perceived, how can one remember and attend to an object? Considering this meaning, it is said to be without mindfulness and without attention. The meaning of no mindfulness and no attention also has two aspects: when examining the phenomena of objects such as form and their characteristics with the wisdom of individual discrimination, since the true state is not found, therefore it is impossible to remember and attend to that true state. Considering this point, the meaning of no mindfulness and no attention is just that. Emptiness, in which form and the characteristics of form are not established in reality, is extremely necessary to remember and attend to. If one does not remember and attend to it, how can one meditate on the meaning of emptiness? All Tibetans have failed to distinguish this key difference, and in the time of meditation, they generally stop conceptualization, which seems to be entering the sect of Heshang. One should understand the teachings of Master Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla, who separately explained this key difference. If one examines with wisdom, since there are no phenomena such as arising and ceasing in the three times in ultimate truth, then what is experienced, that is, the object to be realized, does not exist in reality, so how can it be remembered as an object of consciousness? How can one attend to it? If one examines with the wisdom of ultimate truth, since there are no phenomena of grasping and being grasped to be remembered, therefore, all the conceptual elaborations of grasping and being grasped are completely pacified, thereby entering the realization of non-conceptual wisdom. By entering that, one realizes the meaning of emptiness, and emptiness is not obscured by the phenomena of objects, thereby directly realizing emptiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has been transformed. Because of directly realizing emptiness, all nets of evil views such as permanence and annihilation are abandoned in an irreversible way. 2-73 The term 'direct perception' has two meanings: the Logicians refer to the object-possessor as direct perception, while the Madhyamikas refer to the unobstructed object as direct perception. In this case of 'directly realizing emptiness,' it is understood according to the Madhyamika view, considering the object as direct perception. By cultivating the wisdom of realizing emptiness, which is endowed with skillful means, great compassion, and generosity, one is also skilled in the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. Why? Because in the post-meditation state, one relies on the conventional aspect of skillful means, thus becoming skilled in the conventional; in the meditative state, one relies on the wisdom of realizing emptiness, thus becoming skilled in the ultimate. Being skilled in both skillful means and wisdom and cultivating them in one's being, one obtains unobstructed wisdom from that cause, and thus one will be able to obtain all the Buddha's teachings. How so? From the accumulation of merit, one obtains the thirty-two major marks as the qualities of fruition, and from the accumulation of wisdom, one obtains the thirty-two minor marks, such as the powers, as the qualities of separation. Therefore, discriminating wisdom is the root of all paths, and thus, without truly discriminating wisdom, merely stopping conceptual thoughts will not cause the arising of wisdom that realizes the true meaning. 2-74 If there is no wisdom that realizes the true meaning of selflessness, one will not be able to abandon the obscurations of afflictions. It has already been established by reasoning that discriminating wisdom is the root of all paths. Secondly, this is proven by scripture. As it is said in the *Sutra of the Play of Manjushri*, from 'thus arises' onwards. The meaning of that scripture is: Manjushri called to the golden-topped light maiden and asked: 'How does a Bodhisattva become victorious in the battle against afflictions?' The answer was: 'Manjushri, if one examines and meditates with wisdom, then one will generate the realization of not perceiving all phenomena as truly existent. By what does the realization of not perceiving truth abandon obscurations?' Therefore, it is taught that meditating on the meaning of examining with wisdom and not perceiving all phenomena is the cause of liberation. Therefore, a yogi should become skilled in individual phenomena, and with the wisdom that distinguishes phenomena, contemplate each phenomenon as emptiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
