Although the nature of *zhi gnas* (止观,śamatha-vipaśyanā, 奢摩他-毗钵舍那,calm abiding and insight) is conceptual thought, as the appearance of objects becomes clearer and clearer, the stages of attachment gradually diminish, and the realization of selflessness transforms into a lineage of non-conceptual wisdom. Others, not understanding this method, argue that the *sbyor lam* (修道位,prayoga-mārga, 加行道,path of application) of *zhi gnas* is an antidote to the manifestation of grasping and the grasped, and therefore should not adhere to the conceptual thought of mixed names and meanings. This erroneous understanding should also be discarded far away. Just as the fire of non-conceptual wisdom arises from individual wisdom, burning the firewood of conceptual thought, this is what is taught in the *Ārya Ratnakūṭa Sūtra* (圣者《宝积经》). Fifth, refuting the abandonment of virtuous conduct, which has three points: refuting the view that liberation is achieved by the exhaustion of karma, refuting the desire to not engage in virtuous conduct with scriptural evidence, and stating the faults of not desiring skillful virtuous conduct. The first point is: Some say that one should not perform any skillful virtuous actions, such as virtuous deeds. This is not in accordance with scripture or reason. Because saying that one should not perform virtuous deeds is tantamount to believing that liberation will be attained by the exhaustion of karma, which is actually following the views of the *Ajivikas* (顺世外道,Ājīvika, ājīvika, 耆那教). The *Ajivikas* believe that one does not need to deliberately abandon afflictions, but strives for liberation by exhausting karma. However, in the words of the *Bhagavan* (薄伽梵,Bhagavān, bhagavān, 世尊), it is said that liberation is attained by the exhaustion of the cause of afflictions, not by exhausting all karma. What is the reason for this? Because it is impossible to completely exhaust the karma accumulated since beginningless time, as it is infinite. Even when born in the lower realms, while experiencing the results of non-virtuous karma, other karma will arise again, because the cause of afflictions has not been abandoned. If afflictions have not been eliminated and remain as the cause, then it is impossible to prevent the arising of karma. For example, if a lamp is not extinguished, its light will not disappear. If it is said that liberation is attained by exhausting afflictions, then for those who slander *vipaśyanā* (胜观,vipaśyanā, vipaśyanā, 内观), since there is no antidote to afflictions, it is impossible for afflictions to be exhausted, as stated earlier. If one thinks that one should rely on *vipaśyanā* in order to exhaust afflictions, then when *vipaśyanā* abandons afflictions, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If afflictions cease, liberation will be attained. Therefore, striving to cultivate antidotes to cease karma is futile. The *Pramāṇavārttika* also states: 'The cessation of karma and taming are both useless.' If it is said that because non-virtuous actions throw one into the lower realms, one should not commit them, that is reasonable. Then, why should virtuous actions be prohibited? If it is said that even if they do not cause one to fall into the lower realms, they still cause one to wander in the higher realms, and do not transcend the cause of *saṃsāra*, then prohibiting them is not valid. For it is the virtuous actions instigated by the inverted mind that clings to 'I' and so forth that throw one into *saṃsāra*. However, the actions of the accumulations of merit, such as the giving of Bodhisattvas, which are instigated by great compassion and dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, are not the cause of throwing one into *saṃsāra*. Not being the cause of *saṃsāra*, but becoming the cause of attaining enlightenment, as it is stated in the *Daśabhūmika Sūtra*: 'These very paths of the ten virtuous actions, through the distinction of being completely purified by dedication and so forth, accomplish the Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas themselves.' Secondly, refuting the unwillingness to engage in virtuous conduct with scriptural authority. One can cite the teachings from the *Ratnakūṭa Sūtra*. The meaning of the *sūtra* is: Just as all the great rivers flowing from various directions enter the great ocean and become an indivisible mass of water with one taste, so too, the virtuous actions accumulated by Bodhisattvas through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, if grasped by skillful means and wisdom, will all become of one taste in omniscience. Therefore, it is said in the *sūtra* that in order to become the cause of omniscience, one must accumulate virtue from many doors. The *rūpakāya* (form body) of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as the pure realms of the environment and beings, and the possession of limitless light, and the perfect retinue, and the great enjoyment, and so forth—whatever qualities of excellence depend on the *rūpakāya*—are the very fruit of the accumulation of merit such as giving. If the Blessed One has declared this in the *Daśabhūmika Sūtra* and the *Ratnakūṭa Sūtra* and so forth, then saying that virtuous conduct is not necessary would be contradictory. By prohibiting virtuous conduct, the accumulations of merit such as the vows of individual liberation are also prohibited. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
