If that's the case, since there is no cause for liberation, how can liberation be attained? It's not that giving and other practices are prohibited, but rather it's with the intention of prohibiting attachment to giving and other practices as being truly existent. Therefore, for those who focus on what is true, the mind clings to various characteristics as being true. Whatever giving and so forth that is tainted by the thought of clinging to truth is shown to be not completely pure. It is also explained in the 'Noble Akashagarbha Sutra'. It is said that when sentient beings are driven by inverted minds, giving and so forth, which are characterized by various true perceptions of characteristics, are the work of demons. Second, refuting wrong views on the meaning of the 'Sutra of the Three Heaps': If the 'Sutra of the Three Heaps' states that one should confess engaging in the six perfections, isn't that contradictory? In the dedication section of the 'Sutra of the Three Heaps,' it is also stated: 'Whatever giving, ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom I have practiced, without realizing their equality, falling into objects of focus, giving with attachment, guarding ethics with the highest regard, cultivating patience with the perception of self and other, all of these I confess separately.' The intention behind this is that all minds that focus on truth, not realizing that they are of one taste in emptiness, are driven by attachment to inverted appearances through various perceptions of truth. Giving and so forth are said to be confessed only because they are not completely pure due to the stain of clinging to truth, not because it prohibits relying on the six perfections of giving and so forth in all times and circumstances. If it were not understood in this way, but rather generally prohibited, then it would not be necessary to specifically clarify that giving and so forth are tainted by the inverted clinging to truth, but rather it would become a general negation of all giving and so forth. Because the giving and so forth that cling to truth are specifically pointed out, it is clear that the general aspect of giving and so forth is not prohibited. Third, refuting wrong views on the meaning of the 'Brahma's Inquiry Sutra': If the 'Brahma's Inquiry Sutra' also states: 'All actions are conceptualizations; non-conceptualization is enlightenment,' and so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone says that the 'ground' mentioned in the scriptures refers to all actions being conceptualizations, and that conceptualizations should be abandoned, therefore, this scripture directly states to abandon virtuous actions. Then, regarding the scripture that says this, it is also referring to the occasion of engaging in actions through conceptualizing with thoughts of arising and ceasing, etc. Therefore, it is only for that kind of action that it is said to be entirely conceptualization. It does not abide in the characteristics of clinging to truth, does not manifestly focus on altruistic actions, etc., and abides in bodhisattvas who have attained the eighth ground and above. It is with this in mind that it is prophesied that 'non-conceptualization is enlightenment.' It is not that it universally negates and prohibits other virtuous actions besides the aforementioned actions. Therefore, it only points out the boundary between actions mixed with conceptualization and those not mixed. It is not that in the occasion of fully explaining that all generosity, etc., are understood as unborn and illusory in reality, that it commands not to do these actions. If the intention of the scriptures is understood as universally prohibiting virtuous actions, then, before attaining the eighth ground after meeting Dīpaṃkara (能作灯明佛), the names of those Buddhas whom Śākyamuni (释迦族圣者) himself had served, the Blessed One could not even finish recounting in an eon. Why did those Buddhas, who were worthy of service, not prevent Śākyamuni's virtuous actions such as generosity when he was in the past stage of a bodhisattva? Dīpaṃkara also did not prevent Śākyamuni's virtuous actions at that time. Therefore, Dīpaṃkara and all the other Buddhas who were served did not prevent Śākyamuni's past virtuous actions, which shows that virtuous actions must be done. When Śākyamuni met Dīpaṃkara, he was already abiding on the eighth ground, and Dīpaṃkara did not prevent his virtuous actions, but saw that he was abiding in peaceful and non-characteristic actions. Therefore, at that time, Dīpaṃkara prophesied that Śākyamuni would attain enlightenment in the flower garden. When he attained the eighth ground, his virtuous actions were not prohibited. If you ask, how do you know that skillful means were not prohibited at that time? Because the bodhisattva on the eighth ground...
