If the Buddhas did not encourage those heroes who abide in the signless state to accomplish the virtuous conduct of benefiting others, then in the eighth bhumi, the activity of benefiting others would be interrupted, and they would ultimately enter into nirvana. In the *Dasabhumika Sutra*, the Buddhas of the ten directions forbid not relying on the practice of skillful means. If one were to completely abandon the virtuous conduct of conventional skillful means, then it would contradict all the previously stated scriptural and logical proofs. Seventh, explaining the nature of the Mahayana path, there are four points: Establishing the nature of the Mahayana; refuting the arguments of others; refuting enlightenment through only one method; and demonstrating the necessity of both skillful means and wisdom. The first point is: In the same *Brahma-pariprccha Sutra*, it is said: 'With compassion, giving is also done for the sake of others, and the ripening of that giving is not for oneself. Morality is also maintained for the sake of others, and it is not with attachment to truth,' and so on. Addressing Brahma, the Buddhas said that Bodhisattvas endowed with four qualities are irreversible from the dharmas. What are these four qualities? Taking countless births in samsara to accumulate merit for the sake of others, making countless Buddhas the field of offering to complete the accumulation of merit, and performing immeasurable service and offerings, and so on. If virtuous conduct is not desired, then it contradicts all of these as well. Second, refuting the arguments of others: If it is said that giving and keeping morality, etc., should only be practiced by those with dull faculties, not by those with sharp faculties, then it is not permissible to say so. This is because Bodhisattvas abiding from the first bhumi up to the tenth bhumi must engage in the practices of giving and morality, etc., and it is not the case that they do not practice the remaining perfections. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, Bodhisattvas who have attained the forbearance of non-origination (mī skye ba'i chos la bzod pa, acceptance of the truth that phenomena do not arise or cease) and abide in the eighth ground (sa brgyad pa, the immovable ground, the eighth of the ten Bodhisattva grounds) should also practice giving, great giving, and supreme giving.' This is the Buddha's teaching. This means that even Bodhisattvas who have attained the eighth ground should practice giving in general, and in particular, they should practice giving extremely precious things, that is, great giving, and even giving their own body and life. Therefore, giving and so on are not merely the Dharma of those with dull faculties, and Bodhisattvas of the eighth ground are not considered to have dull faculties. The Compendium of Sutras (mdo kun las btus pa) also states that those with sharp faculties should engage in the six perfections (pha rol du phyin drug, the six perfections of giving, ethics, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom). As it is said in the sutra: 'Bodhisattvas who possess the six perfections and so forth travel by the miraculous power of the Tathagata (de bzhin gshegs pa, a title of the Buddha, meaning 'one who has thus gone').' It is praised that there is nothing faster than traveling by the miraculous power of the Tathagata. What does this indicate? Traveling by the miraculous power of the Tathagata is only for those with sharp faculties, and they also practice the six perfections. Therefore, it is certain that giving and the other six perfections are not merely for those with dull faculties. Apart from the six perfections and the first ground, the Joyful Ground (sa rab tu dga' ba, the first of the ten Bodhisattva grounds), and the ten grounds (sa bcu, the ten stages of Bodhisattva practice), there is no other faster path for Bodhisattvas to enter the path to attain Buddhahood (sangs rgyas thob pa, the attainment of enlightenment). Therefore, the path for all faculties, whether sharp or dull, is none other than the six perfections. How does one enter the path to attain Buddhahood through this? By training in the six perfections, just as the tarnish on gold is gradually removed, the defilements in the mind-stream (sems kyi rgyud, the continuum of consciousness) will also be gradually removed.' Many sutras teach in this way. Entering the Buddha-ground (sangs rgyas kyi sa, the state of Buddhahood) by gradually purifying defilements through the sequential practice of the six perfections is also recorded in the Lankavatara Sutra ('phags pa lang kar gshegs pa) and the Ten Grounds Sutra (sa bcu pa). The sutra states: 'When a Bodhisattva abides in the perfection of wisdom (sher phyin, short for prajnaparamita, the perfection of wisdom) that realizes suchness (de bzhin nyid, the true nature of things), they have entered the first ground (sa dang po, the first of the ten Bodhisattva grounds). From the first ground onwards, they gradually purify the second ground and so on, the higher and higher grounds, and finally enter the state of the Tathagata.' Since the six perfections and the ten grounds are indispensable for entering the state of Buddhahood, there is no other way to reach the city of the Buddha (sangs rgyas kyi grong khyer, a metaphor for the state of Buddhahood) apart from the perfections and the Bodhisattva grounds. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
