If so, what will be attained? Relying solely on becoming accustomed to emptiness, one will fall into the inferior state of nirvana, like a Shravaka. Because wisdom without skillful means cannot attain Buddhahood, therefore, those who wish to attain Buddhahood should rely on the wisdom of realizing emptiness with skillful means. Attaining Buddhahood requires both skillful means and wisdom; it cannot be attained by wisdom alone. Therefore, abiding in the three trainings and placing other disciples in them is called a teacher. Nagarjuna is similar to Dharma in five aspects and similar to conventional truth in two aspects, possessing seven distinctions, hence the name Nagarjuna. The venerable Nagarjuna himself also said that a Bodhisattva without skillful means should not be overly diligent in meditating solely on the profound Dharma of emptiness. The quote cited by Nagarjuna here is also said to be from sources such as the teachings of the venerable Vimalakirti, but that quote is not the direct teaching of the venerable Nagarjuna himself. Relying solely on wisdom without skillful means is contradicted by many reasons and scriptures, therefore, one should follow the path of the union of skillful means and wisdom taught in the scriptures of the Bhagavan, which is endowed with reason and scripture, and should not take the words of other foolish beings as truth. Who, then, is skilled at judging good and bad? It is another person who possesses realization and wisdom. Fourth, regarding the necessity of both skillful means and wisdom, there are two parts: establishing it with scripture and summarizing the context. First, the scripture: In the 'Aryaratnakuta Sutra' it is also said: 'One should meditate in the manner of diligently realizing emptiness, endowed with charity and other limitless virtues, and endowed with all the supreme aspects of skillful means.' It is not said to rely solely on meditating on emptiness. In the 'Aryaratnakuta Sutra' also, wisdom with skillful means is taught: 'O Kashyapa, for example, just as kings who are assisted by ministers accomplish all that is needed, so too, a Bodhisattva's wisdom, if skillful, accomplishes all the deeds of a Buddha.' It is explicitly stated that if one possesses skillful means, one accomplishes the deeds of a Buddha, thereby implying that if one lacks skillful means, one does not accomplish the deeds of a Buddha. Therefore, it is clearly stated that if one relies solely on meditating on emptiness, one will enter into the inferior state of nirvana. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bhagavan also stated in the 'Secret Sutra of the Noble Tathagata' that skillful means are necessary. One should not solely rely on realizing emptiness without any object of mind, but also rely on being skilled in skillful means as well as wisdom. Which words of the sutra indicate this? Among the many sentences in the sutra, the preceding sentence is from 'Son of lineage, for example' to the extensively spoken 'attaining mastery'. Explaining the meaning of that very sutra: For example, fire blazes from the fuel of wood; if there is no fuel of wood, the fire will be extinguished. Similarly, from the characteristics of an object of focus, the mind that focuses will blaze; if there is no object of focus, the mind that focuses on it will be extinguished. Having spoken thus, therefore, the Bodhisattva who is skilled in skillful means, through the perfection of wisdom that realizes emptiness, with the complete purification of the characteristics of elaboration, also knows that all objects of focus and the characteristics of objects are primordially and by their very nature pacified. However, they do not merely fixate on emptiness alone. What then? They do not pacify focusing on the roots of virtue either, because they engage in virtue by manifesting merely as an illusion. When focusing on afflictions, they also know that the nature of wisdom is without inherent existence and does not arise, nor do they cease learning the perfection of skillful means. With wisdom, they individually analyze focusing on emptiness, because they realize that the objects of focus are empty. Nevertheless, with skillful means, they should also regard all sentient beings as objects of focus with great compassion. Son of lineage, in this way, the union of skillful means and wisdom is necessary. Because the Bodhisattva has attained the complete purification of skillful wisdom, it is extensively spoken of as 'attaining mastery over the two truths'. Showing the meaning of the intermediate words of the sutra: Again, it is stated, and so forth, because by alternately training in appearance and emptiness, one is skilled in the manner of practicing the path relying on appearance. Therefore, whatever object of appearance a Bodhisattva focuses on, whatever becomes an object of the mind, must be made an object in the manner of appearance without inherent existence, for the sake of manifestly accomplishing the wisdom of knowledge. Therefore, there is no dharma that does not merely appear and abide as an object of the mind. The Bodhisattva, by training in each and every object of focus in the manner of scrutinizing and eliminating imputations... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
