Dedication of merit entirely to Bodhi is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva. All the endeavors of a Bodhisattva to benefit others are the causes for attaining Bodhi, and therefore, they are seen as going after Bodhi. As it is said in the sutra: 'For example, in the three thousand great thousand world realms, there is nothing that is not used for the enjoyment of sentient beings.' Similarly, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means learns all the causes of omniscience, no matter what the object is. As it is said in the 'Bodhicharyavatara': 'There is nothing that the sons of the Conquerors do not learn; there is nowhere where it does not exist.' Therefore, there is no Dharma that is seen as not benefiting Bodhi. As it is said in the 'Infinite Sutra': The Bodhisattvas have shown infinite ways of practicing skillful means and wisdom. In the way that Bodhisattvas practice skillful means and wisdom, even if one is diligent in learning the accumulation of merit such as generosity, one should not deny the aspect of skillful means such as giving to others. If one does so, it will harm oneself and others, causing harm to oneself and others, and doing disharmonious actions. Secondly, summarizing the meaning of the section: In learning the path of a Bodhisattva, as mentioned above, skillful means and wisdom should be united. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should, in any case, correctly and individually discern the circumstances of limitless phenomena with reason, and learn the ways of the Prajnaparamita. In the post-meditation state, one should accomplish all accumulations of merit such as generosity, as taught by limitless reason and scripture. For those who think that learning the path of a Bodhisattva does not require learning both skillful means and wisdom, that view is unreasonable according to scripture and reason. Therefore, one should abandon, like poison, those who have discriminating wisdom but are not proficient in the scriptures, and who are arrogant, such as the Hwashang (referring to the Huayan sect). So what should one do? One should follow the words of masters Nagarjuna and his direct disciple Aryadeva, and Shantideva and other wise beings, because their words eliminate suffering and are like nectar. Therefore, one should do this: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ལམ་ཉམས་

How to practice the right path? One should focus on all sentient beings, generating great compassion that desires to be free from suffering, and just as a magician knows that the illusion he conjures appears but has no inherent nature, so too, knowing that all phenomena appear but have no inherent nature, with undeluded wisdom, accumulate all virtuous roots, dedicate them to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, diligently engage in all virtuous conduct such as giving, and with both intention and action for the sake of others, strive to liberate all beings from the ocean of suffering. As it appears in the 'Noble Collection of True Dharma'. The meaning is: For example, a magician conjures an illusion, and strives to free that illusion from bondage, because he already knows that the illusion has no inherent nature, so he does not cling to the truth of the illusion. Similarly, knowing that the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, etc., the three realms of existence, are like illusions, this is skillful means for understanding the cause of perfect enlightenment. Although knowing that it is unreal like an illusion, one strives to liberate all beings and performs actions for the benefit of others. If someone asks, 'Then do you cling to the truth of beings?' The answer is, 'Because I already know that all beings are like illusions, I do not cling to the truth.' Fourth, the fruit of meditation is shown. As extensively shown above, one should constantly and respectfully rely on wisdom and means, learning the integration of method and wisdom through intention and action. Why is this so? Because by familiarizing oneself with method and wisdom, one's mindstream gradually matures to the point where obstacles can be directly abandoned and antidotes can be directly generated. In this way, one attains the first ground and, progressing further, moments of wisdom of extreme purity gradually arise. Relying on this wisdom, one thoroughly meditates on the union of calm abiding and insight, establishing the true meaning through reasoning, and when meditation reaches its culmination, by the power of habitual tendencies, attachment to the appearance of duality of grasper and grasped is destroyed, and one attains transcendent wisdom, free from all the nets of conceptual thought to be abandoned on the path of seeing, realizing the sphere of reality, unobscured and exceedingly clear, free from the defilements of afflictions and the winds of conceptual thought. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
