Then how could the Dharma of emptiness, which depends on it, exist? The Root Wisdom says: 'If non-emptiness exists even a little, emptiness will also exist a little. If non-emptiness does not exist even a little, how can emptiness exist?' The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life says: 'When something does not exist, the object to be examined is not seen. At that time, how can non-existence, devoid of support, remain before the mind?' Based on such reasoning, one should meditate on emptiness as being empty of inherent existence. The Collection of Praises also says: 'To destroy all conceptual thoughts, you taught the nectar of emptiness. If someone clings to that as well, you would criticize them.' Saying that emptiness is emptiness also means this. In his commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, the teacher Chandrakirti said: 'Is ultimate truth also conventional truth?' The answer is: 'Yes, it is so.' Because the Blessed One said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, 'Form is like a dream, like an illusion,' and so on, 'Even nirvana is like a dream, like an illusion. If there is another Dharma that is even more superior to nirvana, that is also like a dream, like an illusion.' He quoted these as sources and spoke. The state of form and so on, even emptiness, is said to be ultimate in relation to the appearance of conventionality. If it is based on the ultimate reasoning of examination as described above, then it is conventional, because it exists in name and is empty of inherent existence. Because it exists in name, and the collection of the two that negate the truth is said to be like an illusion and have a false meaning, and the false meaning is conventional. Until this meaning is understood, saying that one has realized the view of the Middle Way is purely a lie. What are the limbs of meditation? In all stages of meditating on emptiness, one should meditate with five limbs: the limb of the object, the limb of meditating on samadhi, the limb of eliminating opposing factors, the limb of generating stability, and the limb of increasing stability. First, it is the object upon which to impose or subtract. Second, it is holding the aspect of the state of the object itself. Third, it is the mindfulness that examines whether the faults of samadhi, sinking and excitement, have arisen or not. Fourth, it is to repeatedly clarify the aspect of equipoise in the subsequent attainment, also with the memory of the subsequent attainment. Fifth, it is the conduct.

Therefore, to clarify in the environment. In these circumstances, two kinds of faults and seemingly faults of samadhi arise. The first is like a fish entering deep water, thinking that thoughts are not scattered, but not realizing that subtle thoughts have scattered to the object. The second is like a drop of water falling on a copper vessel, although thoughts seem wrong, if one recognizes that the object to which the thought is scattered is itself without inherent existence, then one will not deviate from the view of realizing emptiness, so there is no fault. This is only the realm of the superior faculties. The method of practicing vipassanā has been explained above. The meaning of the text: Second, the meaning of the text has six aspects: focusing on the Buddha image for meditation; focusing on general objects for meditation; eliminating the faults of samadhi; the order of alternating practice of shamatha and vipassanā; the necessity of entering both shamatha and vipassanā; the activity of practicing the two accumulations. Focusing on the Buddha image for meditation: The first aspect has three contents: accomplishing shamatha and vipassanā; accomplishing vipassanā; accomplishing benefits. First, when practicing both shamatha and vipassanā, in the stage of practicing shamatha, in order to accomplish shamatha, the yogi should first settle the mind on the meaning of the Tathagata's body as seen by the eyes, and what is heard such as 'the shape and color are like this,' thereby practicing shamatha. The object of focus, the Tathagata's body, is golden yellow like pure gold, adorned with excellent marks and signs, residing in the mandala surrounded by the bodhisattva retinue, and constantly benefiting sentient beings through various methods of taming, one should constantly contemplate in this way. Then generate the intention to attain the qualities of the Buddha, and when focusing on this object, one should pacify the faults of samadhi such as sinking and agitation, thereby meditating. How long should one meditate? Until one can clearly see the Buddha's body as if it were truly appearing before one's eyes, one should strive to practice meditation. Second, accomplishing vipassanā: After accomplishing shamatha, contemplate the clearly appearing image of the Tathagata's body, separately thinking about where the Tathagata's body initially came from and where it ultimately goes, thereby practicing vipassanā that recognizes appearance without inherent existence. The meaning of meditation lies in repeatedly imprinting the mind. As for the reality, from where --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
