When practicing Śamatha (Tibetan: ཞི་གནས།, Meaning: Tranquility, Calm Abiding), focusing the mind on the object of Śamatha does not transcend the scope of conceptual thought (Tibetan: རྟོག་པ་, Meaning: Concepts, Discrimination), because it is said to be holding the image of the object of knowledge (Tibetan: ཤེས་བྱ།, Meaning: Object of knowledge). Saying that conceptual thought should be negated refers to subsequent conceptual thoughts. If one does not understand this principle and universally believes that all conceptual thoughts should be negated, that is the view of the Hwa-shang Mahāyāna. What should be abandoned in Śamatha? As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga (Sanskrit: Madhyāntavibhāga, Tibetan: དབུས་མཐའ་རྣམ་པར་འབྱེད་པ།): 'Laziness and instructions, forgetfulness, sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults.' Laziness and forgetting instructions both hinder practice. Laziness prevents one from engaging in Samādhi (Tibetan: ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན།, Meaning: Concentration, Meditation), and forgetting instructions prevents one from correctly abiding in the meaning of what is to be meditated upon. Sinking (Tibetan: བྱིང་བ།, Meaning: Dullness, Lethargy) and excitement (Tibetan: རྒོད་པ།, Meaning: Agitation, Excitement) both hinder the state of the main practice. Because when the mind is sinking, it cannot clearly hold the object of Samādhi; and when the mind is excited, it is distracted to objects that are not Samādhi. The last two hinder the progression of Samādhi into a superior state. When one sees that sinking or excitement has arisen, if one does not immediately apply the antidote, one will be controlled by the opposing forces of Samādhi. When Samādhi is clear, if one still applies the antidote, that is unnecessary effort, and this effort will interrupt the stable continuity of Samādhi. Therefore, the main faults of Samādhi are considered to be sinking and excitement, because the other five faults are included within these two, so there is no need to explain them separately. Second, the summary of Vipaśyanā (Tibetan: ལྷག་མཐོང་།, Meaning: Insight, Vipassanā) is: 'How many and how, conceptual thought and analysis, individual observation and immovability, the method of practice and the limbs.' What is the Vipaśyanā that distinguishes how many? It is being skilled in the aggregates (Tibetan: ཕུང་པོ།, Meaning: Aggregates, Skandhas), skilled in the elements (Tibetan: ཁམས།, Meaning: Elements, Dhātus), skilled in the sources (Tibetan: སྐྱེ་མཆེད་།, Meaning: Sources, Āyatanas), skilled in dependent origination (Tibetan: རྟེན་ཅིང་འབྲེལ་བར་འབྱུང་བ།, Meaning: Dependent Origination, Pratītyasamutpāda), skilled in what is possible and impossible (Tibetan: གནས་དང་གནས་མ་ཡིན་པ།, Meaning: Possible and Impossible), and skilled in the truths (Tibetan: བདེན་པ།, Meaning: Truths, Satyas). How to be skilled? It is being skilled in the respective names, definitions, classifications, and special characteristics of these. Through these, in the future, one will attain the four specific correct knowledges (Tibetan: སོ་སོ་ཡང་དག་པར་རིག་པ་བཞི།, Meaning: Fourfold perfect discrimination). Without the Vipaśyanā that distinguishes how many, the Vipaśyanā that distinguishes how will not arise, because the basis for adding or subtracting has not been established. Sakya Pandita (Tibetan: ས་སྐྱ་པཎྜི་ཏ།) also said in his response to Nyemo Gomchen (Tibetan: སྙེ་མོ་སྒོམ་ཆེན།): 'The nature of phenomena, how many...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He said, 'One must act as if being proficient in everything, but in reality, understand in a way that cannot be fully comprehended,' this is the key instruction. Here in Tibet, even the name of 'insight' that distinguishes things is not heard. So, what is the insight that distinguishes the truth of things? It is being proficient in the selflessness of persons and being proficient in the selflessness of phenomena. Being proficient in the selflessness of persons also has three aspects: understanding that one's own aggregates (Skandha) are empty of a self of a person, understanding that others' aggregates are empty of a self of a person, and understanding that both are equal in being empty of a self of a person. First, one should train the mind in the first, and later also train the mind in the latter two. Being proficient in the selflessness of phenomena is being proficient in the sixteen emptinesses as attributes of phenomena, and being proficient in the twenty emptinesses. By becoming proficient in each attribute of phenomena, and then individually understanding each attribute of phenomena as being empty of inherent existence, one becomes an antidote to the obscurations of knowledge (jñeyāvaraṇa), which are subtle and extremely subtle. The key point of the 173 aspects mentioned in the 'Ornament of Clear Realization' (Abhisamayālaṃkāra) is also this. In the context of the objects and aspects of the 'part of ascertainment,' the order of severing imputations is shown by explaining many different objects and different aspects, which means that the subtle and extremely subtle differences of the selflessness of phenomena must also be understood. For example, a Hearer (Śrāvaka) focuses on the sixteen aspects of the Four Noble Truths (āryasatyāni), such as impermanence, etc.; while a Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva) in the minor heat stage focuses on each of these objects, such as impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, etc., thereby preventing attachment to truth one by one; and again, in the intermediate heat stage, whether the distinguishing characteristics of the Four Noble Truths are included, or abiding in the distinction of the selflessness of phenomena that is free from affirmation and negation, and understanding the nature of not abiding in abiding and not abiding as being inseparable, is like severing imputations. Others say 'meditate on emptiness and selflessness,' which is merely uttering words, and they have not truly understood the key point. So, what is the insight of conceptualization and analysis of objects? Four ways of conceptualizing and analyzing objects are explained: counting, measuring, conceptualizing, and individual conceptualizing. Counting is holding the categories of names that are to be severed from imputations. Measuring is measuring the meaning associated with that name based on reasoning. Conceptualizing is first conceptualizing the meaning that is to be severed from imputations. Individual --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
