Discriminating observation is: to individually discriminate and observe the special dharmas (qualities), and to separately distinguish the special characteristics of the dharmas-possessing (subject) and individually discriminate and observe them. What is the vipassanā (higher seeing) of discriminating observation? It is to observe the dharmas-possessing, separately grasp the dharmas-possessing, and individually discriminate and observe its characteristic of selflessness. What is the unwavering vipassanā? It is through the wisdom of discriminating observation, analyzing each dharmas-possessing with reason, and after discovering its true state, not being distracted to other directions by the power of samādhi (concentration), but holding that sole true aspect with extreme clarity. What is the way to cultivate vipassanā? It is to cultivate appearances as impermanent, to cultivate the essence of things as free from elaboration, and to cultivate emptiness as naturally pure. The first way is: to divide these appearances into three stages of arising, abiding, and ceasing, the past has ceased, the future has not arisen, the present is exhausted in an instant, and even an instant has no power to abide, and each of the three stages of arising, abiding, and ceasing is further divided into three parts for analysis, ultimately cultivating in a way that cannot be found. The second way to cultivate the essence of appearances as free from elaboration is: through the reason of establishing correct view, such as the vajra splinters that analyze the cause, the existence or non-existence of arising and ceasing that analyze the result, and the reason of one and many separations that analyze the essence. Cultivate in a way that there is no clinging to the cause, the essence is emptiness, and there is no expectation for the result. Relying on this, one will realize the meaning of the three doors of liberation. To this, one must enter with two armors, namely the armor of entering and the armor of retreating. The armor of entering is to enter the emptiness of the cause's nature, the emptiness of the essence's nature, and the emptiness of the result's nature. The armor of retreating is to retreat from clinging to the characteristics of the cause, clinging to the truth of the essence, and expecting the result. The way to cultivate the sixteen emptinesses is: first, take inner emptiness as an example to cultivate, that is, with the vipassanā that distinguishes everything, become proficient in the objects of observation for what to add or subtract, such as the internal dharmas like the eyes. Then, with the vipassanā that distinguishes as it is, individually analyze through the reason of establishing correct view such as one and many separations, and after not being able to find the true state, realize it through inference, or rely on the analogy of the moon in water and the analogy of dreams, and realize the true state through the measure of metaphorical measurement. For example, when the reflection of the moon appears in a container of water, the moon... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even though the mere appearance of the moon exists, it is not established as the nature of the moon itself, because there is no shining of light, no difference in size, and no function of dispelling darkness. Therefore, from the mere appearance of the moon, it is empty of the nature of the moon. Since the appearance of the moon is empty of the moon, appearance and emptiness are not separate entities. First, having understood the example of the moon, apply the example of the moon to all phenomena from form to omniscience (referring to the wisdom of the Buddha), and thereby understand that mere appearance is without inherent existence. Similarly, having understood the nature of the example of a dream, apply it to all other phenomena, and thereby understand that they are without inherent existence. The meaning of 'without inherent existence' must also be understood through this example. First, through the vipashyana (insight meditation) of discernment, one realizes that there is no inherent essence of things. Through the vipashyana of analysis, by reasoning that the dependent phenomena do not exist, one analyzes that the distinguishing characteristics such as permanence and impermanence, emptiness and non-emptiness, etc., also do not exist. Also, in the Prajnaparamita Sutra, it says: 'If one engages in the notion that form is permanent, one is not engaging in the Prajnaparamita. If one engages in the notion that form is impermanent, one is not engaging in the Prajnaparamita. If one engages in the notion that form is empty, one is not engaging in the Prajnaparamita. If one engages in the notion that form is not empty, one is not engaging in the Prajnaparamita.' What is the vipashyana of individual discernment? It is the process of individually discerning the nature of each phenomenon through discernment and analysis during practice. What is the unwavering vipashyana? It is the vipashyana that, through the wisdom of individual discernment, after having investigated and not found the object, holds it completely by the power of samadhi (concentration). Similarly, the way of vipashyana for understanding emptiness, such as understanding the emptiness of external objects like form, and understanding external emptiness, is the same. The way of meditating on the essence of things as free from elaboration has been explained. Third, meditating on emptiness as naturally pure: when it is established that all phenomena are empty, if one thinks that emptiness itself is not true, then, if the dependent phenomena are not found when examined by reasoning, it is not reasonable for emptiness to be a true phenomenon of emptiness. And, when the general characteristic of truth is refuted by reasoning such as one and many, the truth of emptiness is also refuted. When the basis of emptiness—the phenomenon—does not exist. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
