One can adopt a posture like the full lotus position, or a half lotus position like that of Tara. 2-13 This is the difference in postures. To prevent agitation, which is an obstacle to calm abiding, the eyes should not be opened too wide; to prevent dullness, the eyes should not be closed too much, but rather focused on the tip of the nose. If the body is straight, the channels will also be straight; if the channels are straight, the wind will flow naturally; if the wind abides naturally, the mind will be tamed. Therefore, the body should not be too bent or too upright, but kept straight, and the mind should not wander outward, but rather mindfulness should be kept inward. Then, the shoulders should be kept level, without one being higher or lower than the other. The head should not be too high or too low, and should not be tilted to one side or the other, but kept straight from the nose to the navel. The teeth and lips should also be kept relaxed, without being clenched or loose. To avoid accumulating saliva, the tongue should be gently placed against the root of the teeth. To avoid the channels becoming disordered and the wind flowing in the wrong direction, the breath should not be expelled or inhaled with a loud sound, or with force or agitation. So how should it be done? In any case, one should not feel the force of the breath, but rather breathe in and out slowly and naturally. One should train in this way. The differences in the preliminary stages of practice have been explained. 2-14 The differences in the preliminary stages of practice have been explained. Main Practice: Cultivating Calm Abiding and Insight General Meaning Second, the main practice of cultivating calm abiding and insight is divided into two parts: the general meaning and the actual text. The first part is the general meaning. First, the summary of calm abiding is: the basis, the method of practice, the essence, the classification, the order, the elimination of obstacles, and the abandonment of what is to be abandoned. Through these seven aspects, calm abiding is explained. What is the basis upon which one relies to practice? The classification of the basis of practice is sevenfold: practicing by observing the peace and roughness of the upper and lower realms; practicing calm abiding by focusing on the inhalation and exhalation of breath; practicing calm abiding by focusing on ugliness; practicing calm abiding by focusing on the classification of elements; practicing calm abiding by focusing on the four immeasurables such as love; practicing calm abiding by focusing on dependent origination; and practicing calm abiding by focusing on the image of the Tathagata. The first six are explained in the Compendium of Abhidharma, and the latter is explained in this treatise. What is the method of practice? Nine ways of settling the mind have been taught, as mentioned in the first volume of the Stages of Meditation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As explained earlier in the section on śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind), it should be understood. What is its nature? It is to not let the mind wander to other places from the object one wishes to focus on, but to initially settle the mind on the object and maintain it continuously. What are its divisions? Common ones include the samādhi of gradually abiding, the eight liberations, the samādhi without afflictions, and so on. Uncommon ones include what is stated in the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra: 'The samādhi of heroic progress, the vajra-like samādhi, the illusion-like samādhi,' and so on, which explains one hundred and sixty divisions of samādhi. The Abhidharmasamuccaya states that śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas do not even know the names of these. What is the order? First, one should ascertain the correct meaning through hearing and thinking, and then cultivate śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind). Once śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) is accomplished, one should seize the previous view with śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind), and then meditate on the union of śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) and vipaśyanā. This is what Jowo Je (Atiśa) said. The Bodhicaryāvatāra also states: 'First, seek śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind); that is accomplished when there is no attachment to worldly objects.' This also means the same thing. In this text as well, it is said that one should first cultivate śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) and then enter vipaśyanā, which also means first ascertaining the correct meaning through hearing and thinking. Generating a pure view, and then entering śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind), and then entering the order of vipaśyanā is also this. Some people, without first having the correct view, first cultivate śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) and then enter vipaśyanā, which is without the essential instructions. In any case, in both śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) and vipaśyanā, the order of first cultivating śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) is not definite. As stated in the Abhidharmasamuccaya: 'Some have attained vipaśyanā but have not attained śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind); for these, one cultivates śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind) based on vipaśyanā.' In the seventeen orders of accumulating merit, it is also said that one first enters the accumulation of wisdom and then enters the accumulation of merit. The accumulation of merit is considered to be samādhi. What eliminates these wrong views? Some say that in the stage of śamatha (藏文:ཞི་གནས།, 梵文天城体:शमथ, 梵文罗马拟音:śamatha, meaning: calming the mind), conceptual thought is to be abandoned, so one meditates without thinking of anything. There are two types of conceptual thought: conceptual thought that makes the mind focus on the object and conceptual thought that makes the mind wander from the object to other places. Conceptual thought that makes the mind focus on the object is not to be abandoned. The state of ordinary beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
