Just as a flame remains still in a windless place, when the mind is focused on its object, it will not waver to other places. Not clinging to the object of focus is not what needs to be negated; what truly needs to be negated is the mind wandering to other places. When it is said that conceptual thoughts should be negated during concentration, it refers to this situation. If one believes that all conceptual thoughts in general need to be negated, then how can ordinary beings cut off additions and subtractions on the object of Shamatha (calm abiding) and Vipassanā (insight)? When practicing Vipassanā, just as the sun rises in a place covered by darkness, and darkness cannot remain, relying on the reasoning that establishes the suchness of emptiness of the Dharmas, such as the aggregates of form, relying on metaphors like dreams or reflections in water, through the measure of analogy that measures the meaning, one realizes as it is, and thus arises the appearance of wisdom that has a true object. When the appearance of wisdom arises, because the root of obscuration—the clinging to reality—is cut off, all obscurations are abandoned. It is like a branch that withers when its root is cut off. Third, regarding the object to be entered, there are two aspects: a brief explanation and a detailed explanation. First is the brief explanation: the stage of the path or the nature of the path is perfected by Shamatha and Vipassanā. Therefore, the Blessed One, in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* (Explanation of the Thought Sutra), taught the four distinctions of the objects of the path for Yogis: On the path of accumulation, Shamatha focuses on the general meaning, so it is a non-conceptual image; during the stage of joining path, Shamatha focuses on the appearing general meaning, and Vipassanā analyzes it, so it is a conceptual image; during the stages of seeing and meditation, one focuses on the ultimate reality of things—suchness; during the stage of no more learning, the desired need to be manifested is completely fulfilled. For this, Yogis call it the object of focus because they regard it as the object to be attained. Second is the detailed explanation: there are four objects of the path, among which Shamatha, during the path of accumulation and the path of joining, focuses only on the general meaning of all internal and external Dharmas, so it is called focusing on the image; for images of the Buddha, etc., one focuses on them believing them to be the Buddha, which is called a non-conceptual image. What is non-conceptual? Divided into two terms, 'non-conceptual' and 'image,' during the path of accumulation, Shamatha focuses only on the general meaning of the object, which is real --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because there is no discrimination or analysis of meaning through reasoning, it is called 'non-conceptual'. What is meant by 'image'? It means that one focuses on the image of the Dharmas as heard and understood in the mind, or by taking only the general meaning as the object, hence it is called 'image'. What is a 'image with conceptualization'? For a yogi practicing the path, in order to realize the reality of the object of Samatha (calm abiding) through wisdom, when the Vipassana (insight) arising from meditation examines the reality of the image of the object of Samatha, the nature of Vipassana is the conceptualization that distinguishes reality. Because it repeatedly conceptualizes reality in Samadhi, the object of Vipassana is called 'image with conceptualization'. The Samadhi with an object is the Dhyana (meditation) that thoroughly distinguishes meaning. The yogi repeatedly realizes the nature of the reality of the image of the object of Samatha through wisdom, thereby thoroughly understanding the nature of all internal and external Dharmas as they are. For example, just as the image of one's face appears in a mirror, and upon careful examination with the mind, even slight differences such as ugliness and beauty of one's face become apparent. What is 'focusing on the limit of things'? If one examines with the reasoning that analyzes the ultimate truth, such as one and other, all things ultimately do not go beyond Suchness, and cannot be sought separately from Suchness. Therefore, Suchness is called 'the limit of things'. When the nature of the limit of things, that is, Suchness, is directly realized, because the Suchness of the limit of things is directly understood, the wisdom of the first Bhumi (ground) is called 'focusing on the limit of things'. What is 'accomplishing the purpose completely'? After attaining the first Bhumi, just as one continuously takes the essence of medicine to eliminate physical ailments, gradually purifying the diseases, similarly, in the second Bhumi (the stainless), the third Bhumi (the illuminating), and so on, in the remaining Bhumis, the impurities to be abandoned by meditation are gradually and thoroughly purified, until the moment the Vajra-like Samadhi arises, immediately followed by abiding in it, abandoning all the seeds of obscurations, and thereby attaining the wisdom of the Buddha. When the nature of abandoning all obscurations --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
