When one, through practicing the path, fully accomplishes the desired result, at that time, having realized the ultimate wisdom on the Buddha-ground, this is called 'accomplishing the purpose'. At that time, he is called 'Tathāgata Meditator'. Fourth, summarizingly showing the fruit of entering (the path): In the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* (Explication of the Thought Sutra) it says: 'The four objects of focus for yogis', then, what meaning and purpose does such a presentation reveal? By cultivating *śamatha* (calm abiding) and *vipaśyanā* (insight) in harmony on the path of accumulation, one will directly realize the limit of reality, suchness, on the path of seeing. Thereafter, on the path of meditation, by meditating on the nature of reality already directly seen, one will obtain the quality of abandoning all obscurations, thereby obtaining the complete accomplishment of the purpose of previously practicing the path. That complete accomplishment of purpose is Buddhahood itself, because one has attained the state of having accomplished the fruit of practicing the Mahāyāna path. Therefore, since the fruit of cultivating *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* is Buddhahood, those who desire to attain Buddhahood should cultivate both *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* in union. Those who do not cultivate *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* in union will neither realize the limit of reality nor attain the Buddha-ground of complete purpose, this is the implied meaning. Fifth, showing the distinction of the characteristics of what is to be cultivated: Given the existence of both *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā*, in short, *śamatha* is single-pointedness of mind. Here, 'point' refers to the object of focus, and 'single' means that the mind does not wander to other thoughts but is fixed on that single object of focus. *Vipaśyanā* is the realization of the meaning of selflessness through wisdom.' The Blessed One thus taught the characteristics of *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā*. From where? From the *Ārya Ratnamegha Sūtra* (Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra) and other scriptures. The Order of the Method of Meditation Second, regarding the order of the method of meditation, there are two parts: a brief presentation and a detailed explanation. First is the brief presentation: When entering the path, the yogi abides in the causes of *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā*, namely, pure morality, and the causes of *śamatha* as explained in the previous *Bhāvanākrama* (Stages of Meditation), etc., in order to train the mind in the Mahāyāna, generating great compassion focused on all sentient beings, one must first ensure that great compassion arises in the mindstream. Then begin... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having generated the supreme Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind), one should diligently engage in hearing many scriptures that are the causes of Vipassanā (higher seeing), contemplate their meaning with reason, and apply the contemplated meaning single-mindedly to meditation. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa (Treasury of Knowledge): 'One who possesses discipline, hearing, and thought, should diligently apply themselves to meditation.' The distinctions of the stages of application Second, the detailed explanation is divided into three aspects: the distinctions of the stages of application, the actual practice of Śamatha (calm abiding) and Vipassanā, and the activities to be accomplished in the post-meditation period. The first aspect has five points: subsequent activities, the place of meditation, the distinctions of motivation, the distinctions of accumulating merit, and the distinctions of conduct. The first point is: when entering into the practice of meditation, the yogi should completely finish all the initial activities of a single meditation session, even including activities such as urinating and defecating, and then meditate. The second point is: where to meditate? One should meditate in a pleasant place free from the thorns of sounds that disturb Samādhi (meditative concentration). The third point is: one should completely think, 'In order to establish all sentient beings in the essence of Bodhi (enlightenment), I will practice Samādhi,' and not only that, but also with the thought of liberating all beings from the ocean of suffering, one should generate great compassion and meditate. The fourth point is: place images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, whether painted or cast, in front, or other supports of body, speech, and mind, and then prostrate to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions. There are two types of prostration: from the knees to embracing, and the five-limbed prostration. As stated in the Vinaya (Discipline) Sutra Garland: 'There are two types of prostration for monks, one is the five-wheeled mandala, and the other is from the knees to embracing.' Here, it refers to the five-limbed prostration, and with the supports of body, speech, and mind, and with the mind, make offerings, offering flowers and so on as much as possible, praising the qualities with speech, and in order to eliminate the obstacles to the arising of Samādhi, confess one's sins, and in order to increase merit, rejoice in the merits of all beings, and then meditate. The fifth point is the distinction of conduct: in the meditation room, on a very soft and comfortable cushion, like the venerable Vairochana (the Illuminator). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
