萨。之后，夜晚前往三十三天，降伏了乐神之王喜悦。之后，下行降伏了外道遍行者极贤。八十二岁，在鸡年，昴宿月（藏历十二月）初八的傍晚，月亮落于山顶时，示现涅槃。之后，阿难陀等用五百层布裹起佛陀的遗体，然后用细棉裹起，之后又用五百层布覆盖，安放在铁棺材里，用麻油灌满后点火焚烧（火化），却无法点燃。之后，圣者迦叶住在王舍城鹫峰山的琵琶罗洞中，想要拜见佛陀，于是在禅定中次第观察，发现佛陀不在任何地方，得知已在拘尸那迦涅槃。于是告知国王阿阇世，然后前往，途中与聚集的五百眷属一同前往，路上遇到一位老妇人。老妇人说：“佛陀涅槃了，你还不去吗？”那人说：“佛陀涅槃之后，学习和教导的戒律都没了，头巾就像伞一样，现在可以随意行为了。”说完他很高兴。根据他的说法，佛陀的教法似乎要衰落了，心想必须结集如来的教言，于是前往。在拘尸那迦见到了圣者阿那律陀和阿难陀等人，听说了佛陀如何逝世的经过。之后，圣者迦叶服侍佛陀的遗体，用细棉和布交替，用一千层布和细棉裹起遗体，用麻油灌满后，火自然燃烧起来。摩揭陀邦出现了一千卡车的舍利，于是分成八份：一份给了草城的人们，第二份给了罪恶之地的拘尸那迦人，第三份给了有证悟的国王种姓布鲁古，第四份给了香音城的国王种姓卓达，第五份给了遍入洲的婆罗门，第六份给了释迦族的迦毗罗卫，第七份给了广严城的国王种姓离车毗。

Sa. Then, in the evening, he went to the Thirty-Three Heavens and subdued the Gandharva King Delight. Then, descending, he subdued the heretic Parivrajaka Very Good. At the age of eighty-two, in the year of the Bird, on the eighth day of the month of Mrigasira (December in the Tibetan calendar), at dusk, when the moon set on the mountaintop, he passed into Nirvana. Then, Ananda and others wrapped the Buddha's body with five hundred layers of cloth, then wrapped it with fine cotton, then covered it again with five hundred layers of cloth, and placed it in an iron coffin. They filled it with sesame oil and tried to ignite it (cremate it), but it would not burn. Then, the venerable Kashyapa was residing in the Pippala cave on Vulture Peak in Rajagriha. Desiring to meet the Buddha, he entered into Samadhi and gradually observed, but found that the Buddha was not residing anywhere. He then learned that the Buddha had passed into Nirvana in Kushinagar. He informed King Ajatashatru and then set out. On the way, he was joined by five hundred assembled followers. On the road, he met an old woman. She said, "The Buddha has passed into Nirvana, aren't you going?" The man said, "Since the Buddha has passed into Nirvana, there are no more rules for learning and teaching. Head coverings are like umbrellas, now we can act as we please!" He said this and was happy. According to his words, it seemed that the Buddha's teachings were about to decline. Thinking that it was necessary to compile the words of the Tathagata, he proceeded. In Kushinagar, he met the venerable Anuruddha and Ananda and others, and heard the story of how the Buddha had passed away. Then, the venerable Kashyapa attended to the Buddha's body, alternating fine cotton and cloth. He wrapped the body with a thousand layers of cloth and fine cotton, and when it was filled with sesame oil, the fire ignited on its own. A thousand cartloads of relics appeared from Magadha, and they were divided into eight parts: one part was given to the people of Gramaka, the second part was given to the Mallas of Kushinagar in the land of sin, the third part was given to the king of the enlightened Vriksha clan, the fourth part was given to the royal family of the city of Shravasti, the fifth part was given to the Brahmins of Jambudvipa, the sixth part was given to the Shakyas of Kapilavastu, and the seventh part was given to the Licchavis of Vaishali.
