The measure of the accumulation of merit, thinking, 'I also completely dedicate it,' is such that in the three-thousand great-thousand world system, as many beings as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, if a son or daughter of good family were to focus on the ten virtuous paths and place them on the path of merit, would that merit be great? It would be great. However, it would not even approach one hundredth of the merit of this non-objective dedication. All such things can be inferred. Subhuti, it can be inferred for all beings in the three-thousand great-thousand world system. Let alone the merit of placing them in the ten virtuous paths, would the merit of placing them in the four concentrations be great? It would not even approach one hundredth of the non-objective dedication. Placing them in the four formless absorptions, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in clairvoyance, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in a solitary buddha, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in a stream-enterer, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in a once-returner, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in a non-returner, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in an arhat, the dedication is greater than that. Placing them in a solitary buddha, the dedication is greater than that. Subhuti, in the three-thousand great-thousand world system, as many beings as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, all enter into unsurpassed enlightenment, and those who have entered, each bodhisattva gives to all beings as many as there are, with clothes, alms, bedding, medicine for the sick, possessions, and all means of comfort, for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, with objective focus, would they generate much merit? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, much. Sugata, much. Immeasurable. It is impossible to count. If it were something with form, it would not even fit in the three-thousand great-thousand world system as many as the grains of sand in the Ganges River. The Buddha said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. When a bodhisattva dedicates with this dedication of the dharmadhatu, which is completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, the former would not even approach one hundredth of the merit, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred thousand.

Even rains, rains of hundreds of thousands of kotis, cannot come close, nor can they be counted in number, nor can examples be tolerated. Why is that? Because the former is given with the perception of an object, while the latter is without an object. Then, from the gods of the Four Great Kings to the gods down to Akanistha, the gods offered flowers, umbrellas, and so on to the Bhagavan, and showed respect and so forth, saying: "Oh! Bhagavan, this dedication of the great Bodhisattva of Dharma is a great dedication, for the dedications of giving and so forth by Bodhisattvas with objects are overwhelmed. For the sake of being fully grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, this is a great dedication." Then the Bhagavan said to the gods: "Sons of the gods, if the three-thousand great-thousand world realms were filled with beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and all of them generated the mind of enlightenment, and then each Bodhisattva was given clothes, food, bedding, medicine for illness, and all the necessary comforts for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges, would they not generate immeasurable merit? Even so, it would not equal one hundredth part of the dedication without an object, and so on." On top of that, all those Bodhisattvas, having perfectly practiced discipline with body, speech, and mind, guarding discipline with the perception of an object for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges, would have great merit, but even that would not equal the dedication. Let alone the merit of discipline. Subhuti, on top of that, if the three-thousand great-thousand world realms were filled with beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and all those beings were to strike and beat each Bodhisattva, but still cultivated patience with an object, and each Bodhisattva cultivated it for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges, even that would not equal the dedication. Let alone cultivating patience. For as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges, those beings, without killing, without being overcome by sleep and drowsiness, with the perception of an object,
