Now, benefit and merit come simultaneously. If it's not complete, even if the illness is cured, merit won't arise. Je Rinpoche said that most of the main and secondary (illnesses) have (benefit and merit). I (referring to himself) put a lot of effort into the preliminary and concluding practices. The greater the power of the illness, the more this illness of mine guides things and so on onto the right path, and for the preliminary practices, (the illness) is an important source. He said joyfully: The great wisdom dwells in the body. All discriminations are completely abandoned. Pervading all things. The body is not born from the body. When asked about the meaning of this statement, he said: The great wisdom dwells, referring to the great wisdom dwelling in this body made of the five enlightenments in a state of non-duality of bliss and emptiness. It is separate from all discriminations, it is the co-emergent wisdom without discrimination, therefore it abandons all discriminations. Pervading things, referring to the wisdom of non-duality of bliss and emptiness, which is empty of the eight extremes of elaboration, and all things also pervade all things because of their emptiness of inherent nature. It dwells in the body, but it is not born from the body. It is not produced by the effort of the body. When asked about the definition of the uncharacterized, he said: In general, the uncharacterized is difficult to understand. In the mindstream of those to be tamed, there is the seed of the afflictions of the origin. Because of this cause, they awaken and produce the suffering result. There is also the seed of the noble truth of the path. If a virtuous cause is given, it will manifest the cessation and the three aspects of enlightenment. Thus, when both cause and seed are present, and no cause is able to control it, that moment is the uncharacterized. When asked, if afflictions arise, and one does not apply the path as a remedy, but achieves it in another way, how much power would it have? He replied, using the path as a remedy cuts off the root of increase. Look at this vase. Think of the mandala. The consciousness of grasping at the vase is cut off. It's like that. It is said that when the Bhagavan's foot was pierced by a thorn, it was said to be the remainder of karma. When asked, did the former caravan leader's skillful killing of the short-speared black man involve hatred? He replied, the caravan leader had no hatred. With immeasurable great compassion, if he did not prevent such an action, that person himself would go to hell. All the people on the boat would also be bound by hatred.

Seeing that they were going to fall into hell, and unable to bear it with immeasurable compassion, thinking that it would not be good for those people to engage in such actions, I would rather bear the karmic consequences of killing the black men and killed them. The Buddha said that this could reverse the cycle of rebirth for countless eons, and it was reversed with immeasurable compassion. If one harbors hatred, know that it is impossible to reverse rebirth. Someone wondered, what is the reason that even after attaining Buddhahood, a sandalwood forest appeared as a result of severing the lives of others? This is because it is the skillful means of action that arises from past causes. If there were no sandalwood forest, those people would not be able to escape from the karma of following hatred. When asked about the reason for the appearance of the sandalwood forest, he said, 'Because in the past you did such and such actions, such things will still happen now.' Those people therefore turned away from that kind of mentality, thinking, 'If such things happen to the Bhagavan who has abandoned afflictions, what more can be said about us?' And so on, virtues arose, and this became a skillful means of action. This is cause and effect; if the cause had not been planted in the past, even if one desired a sandalwood forest, it would not appear.' When asked where the sandalwood forest resided before it appeared, he said, 'It resides in the mind of Bodhi.' When told that the appearance of the sandalwood forest was a residue of karma, if one asks, 'If it is a residue, will it be perfected by it?' The answer is, 'It will not be perfected. Because the mind of Bodhi is not exhausted, the sandalwood forest will not be exhausted.' He said that body, speech, and mind will not be exhausted, and with the wheel of jewels, he benefits sentient beings, and the deeds he performs are without limit. When asked what kind of cause led to the Venerable Phagmo Drupa's foot being pierced by a poisonous thorn, he said, 'I do not know what kind of cause it was.' In short, whatever it was, it arose as a skillful means of action. Because a poisonous thorn pierced his foot, a lot of blood came out of his body, and once he was close to death, he was awakened by his attendant calling him. At that time, he understood the ways in which the three realms appear and the ways in which the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize, and therefore he spoke of dreams and the bardo. He said that if there had been no poisonous thorn, these teachings would not have appeared. When asked how to recognize that appearances are one's own mind, he said, 'Appearances are not external, but are one's own mind. Whatever kind of mind there is, that is what will appear.' At the moment when a thought of hatred suddenly arises
