It is necessary. Dharma that is not practiced is not necessary, for example, doctors, etc. Understanding this depends on devotion to the noble guru. Lord Phagmo Drupa perfected hearing and contemplation. Although he relied on four accomplished gurus, he thought that those were not enough, so he sought Lord Gampopa. Therefore, a guru who possesses qualities is needed. Also, this precious lineage is needed. For this, there are different traditions such as the oral transmission of tummo, or the oral transmission of illusory body, or the oral transmission of dreams, etc. The self-arisen Mahamudra is not possessed by anyone other than Lord Gampopa. Therefore, the source of this must be sought there. When finding a guru who possesses qualities, it is necessary to accomplish whatever that guru says, and not to transgress the guru's words. All qualities depend on the guru, and if devotion is perfected, then realization will be perfected. A yogi who possesses realization, in general, is also the one who protects the teachings of the Tathagata. In particular, the tradition of this precious lineage is maintained by him. If the Buddha's teachings are harmed, then the yogi will protect it, like Master Shantideva. If there is no practice, even if a scholar who is proficient in the five sciences, the light of wisdom increases, that is of no benefit to oneself, nor is it of benefit to others. What is the need for a Dharma that is of no benefit to oneself or others? Therefore, if summarized concisely, diligently engaging in the samadhi of the two aspects of bodhicitta day and night, that is Dharma. Furthermore, hearing from the venerable guru, the way in which the Buddhas of the past, the Buddhas of the future, and the Buddhas who are now abiding in the ten directions tame those to be tamed is the same, relying on the cause and effect of the two aspects of bodhicitta. The cause of attaining Buddhahood is also the two aspects of bodhicitta. Becoming a Buddha is also becoming a Buddha in the nature of the two aspects of bodhicitta. After becoming a Buddha, placing all sentient beings, who are as limitless as space, in happiness, free from suffering, and establishing them in unsurpassed bodhi, is also done through the two aspects of bodhicitta. Until bodhi is attained, in the meantime,

When a Bodhisattva practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva, it is with the very mind of Bodhicitta that he benefits sentient beings. Among these, the four objects of gathering initially cause sentient beings to abide in the three minds. First, it is through generosity that the benefit of sentient beings is accomplished. Generosity also has four aspects, such as giving. Giving is the giving of wealth and possessions; whether it is much or little, one should first cultivate a mind that is free from attachment, free from hatred, and free from delusion, and then give. The fields of giving are also twofold: the field of sentient beings and the field of the noble ones. Among the fields of the noble ones, the best is the Buddha, the intermediate is the Bodhisattva, and the lowest are the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Those with high faculties should choose the field of sentient beings, showing compassion to the poor, love to the wicked, care to the confused, compassion to the unrestrained, and sympathy to those under the control of other countries. Thus, by giving to the inferior, that very generosity causes that sentient being to abandon the obscurations of attachment and afflictions, and all the obstructions of knowledge, and thus causes them to abide in unsurpassed Bodhi. Some say that the wealth of the Lama is not to be consumed. This is not in accordance with the scriptures, because the assembly of the giver is complete, and all the temporary and ultimate benefits of the object of giving arise in dependence on that very generosity. For example, in the city of Kuru, a sentient being gave his own flesh as a gift; when he took birth as a captain, he gave his body to eighty thousand ants; when he took birth as King Loving Strength, he gave it to five Yaksha brothers. Complete giving is giving away sons and wives, such as when the Thus-Gone One took birth as King All-Liberating, he gave his two children, a son and a daughter, to an evil Brahmin. Great giving is giving away one's head, hands, and feet, like King Moonlight. Immeasurable giving is teaching the Dharma to other beings. This is more difficult and more excellent to give than all other giving, because someone fills worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with precious jewels, and with a joyful mind offers them to a king, it is not as good as someone
