Sa! What kind of body is taken due to karma? From that, by grasping at "I" and "mine," one wanders in this ocean of suffering in the three realms. That is, according to how the conditions of samsara are, samsara is accomplished. This is called the condition itself. Now, one might think, isn't the very nature of mind, which is primordially unborn, transferred to various conditions? That is not the case. For example, if a crystal jewel is placed on top of five-colored cloths, it appears as the color of the cloth. However, that is not because the jewel has transferred its color, but because it appears that way due to the condition of the cloth. Similarly, the very nature of mind, which is primordially unborn, arises according to how the conditions are. Considering this, it is said: Just as through various color conditions, a jewel appears unreal, so through various sentient being conditions, the pervader appears unreal. If it is said like that, other than what is accomplished by conditions, where is there an existent thing? Now, one might think, is that conditioned samsara known through scripture or through reasoning? It is known through scripture, for it is said that through the condition of ignorance, actions arise, up to aging and death. When conditions cease, samsara ceases. Now, one might think, by ceasing which condition does samsara cease? By ceasing the condition of ignorance, from actions up to aging and death cease. Where does it cease? It ceases in the emptiness of the very nature of mind, which is primordially unborn, like a bubble dissolving in water or a cloud vanishing in the sky. What arises from conditions also arises like a bubble rising from water, but that is not different from the nature of mind, just like a bubble in water. Therefore, cessation also ceases in that very thing. Regarding this, those who desire the enlightenment of the Shravakas stop conditions like damming water, which is the enlightenment of the Shravakas. Those who stop conditions like damming water through the power of antidotes, which is practiced by those who desire the enlightenment of the Pratyekabuddhas, is the enlightenment of the Pratyekabuddhas. The utterly pure and completely abandoned of all conditions is the unsurpassed enlightenment, which are the three types of enlightenment. These three types of enlightenment also arise from practicing the two types of samadhi: the samadhi of shamatha (calm abiding) and the samadhi of vipashyana (insight). Regarding this, in the *Lankavatara Sutra*, it is said: "Mind being pacified is shamatha; knowing dharmas is vipashyana." Therefore, one must first accomplish shamatha, because vipashyana with excellent shamatha

Having understood that afflictions are completely pacified, one should first seek calm abiding, which is manifestly accomplished without attachment to the world. If asked how to do it, it is said that in this world, one is attached to the five desirable qualities: one is attached to beautiful forms, hates ugly forms, and is deluded by neutral forms. Similarly, with pleasant and unpleasant sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, one is attached, hates, and is deluded. Through these, the mind becomes distracted. Once the mind is distracted, one cannot attain calm abiding. Is it necessary to pursue the five desirable qualities of this world, to manage the livelihoods of parents, relatives, and in-laws? In the past, those people also wandered in the ocean of suffering in samsara. Therefore, one should urge oneself with the whip of impermanence. This world is like placing green grass in front of a tiger and leopard. Only when one does not desire it can one truly accomplish the samadhi of calm abiding. Moreover, the Tathagata became the Bodhisattva of the last existence. When the power of merit and wisdom was perfected, he also saw the four sights of old age, sickness, death, and renunciation in the four directions. Seeing old age, he felt that sickness was suffering. Seeing death, which is separation from consciousness, he said, "I am truly unable to cope with worldly behavior." Then he lowered his head. Therefore, for the world including the gods, not to mention others. By abandoning attachment to this world, in order to generate calm abiding and insight meditation in the mindstream, one also needs a qualified lama. The qualified lama should preferably be one who possesses vast clairvoyance, knowing the three times. By teaching the essence from one of the practices that the student has been accustomed to since previous lives, it is not difficult for calm abiding to arise in his mindstream. For example, like a Kadampa Geshe or the master Nagarjuna. In general, is calm abiding necessarily something specific? Whatever samadhi it may be, as long as the mind can focus on one point, it will become calm abiding. If one understands calm abiding as bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, how can one understand its vastness? Desire is the gateway to the Dharma, similarly
