Therefore, one's own affairs are important. If a finger is cut, the finger hurts. If a thumb is cut, the thumb hurts. If you think it is necessary for yourself, where would there be wealth that you would not spare your life for? Food is obtained by begging, clothes are worn from discarded rags, and a dwelling is sufficient with just the shade of a tree. The Bhagavan only praised these, and one part of the scriptures is the praise of begging. The master Āryadeva also summarized it: By engaging fully in begging for food, one abandons pride and becomes tolerant of contempt. The body does not come under the influence of offerings, and there is no fear or suffering when invited. Without speaking words, beings apply vast bliss as a basis for generosity. Thus he spoke. The glorious Phagmo Drupa also said: No matter how many cities there are, food will not run out, so where is there any fear of hunger? Thus he spoke. Furthermore, discarded rags are sufficient for clothing. There are two types of discarded rags: abandoned discarded rags and worn-out discarded rags. Abandoned discarded rags are those that others have discarded because they can no longer be worn. These are picked up, washed, and worn after avoiding the shade. Worn-out discarded rags are those where, without specifically seeking them, if good clothes appear, the best part is offered to the lama and the Three Jewels, so there is something to wear out. Then it is sufficient to wear them yourself. If you are poor, even if you have good clothes, you should first make an offering and then wear them. Therefore, discarded rags are necessary. One part of the scriptures is the praise of discarded rags. The master Āryadeva summarized it: The Victorious One abandoned white clothes with golden swan patterns, and what did he take instead? Who would not accept discarded rags, which are worshiped by humans and gods alike? Good clothes are as cool as the moon, and even those imbued with pleasant fragrances do not generate the joy that is obtained by relying on the basis of discarded rags. Relying on it, countless arhats, holding the sign of discarded rags, without fault and easy to obtain, as a symbol of goodness, do they not rejoice? Thus he spoke. Furthermore, a dwelling is sufficient with just the shade of a tree. There is a part of the scriptures that praises this, and the master Āryadeva said:

Also, to summarize, what is a suitable place under a tree? Branches grow with golden flowers, Colors fade, and leaves wither. Under the tree, to those who diligently practice, Show the thought of impermanence, it is said. Or, one must dwell in a charnel ground. The praise for this is also given by the teacher Āryadeva: Those who dwell in charnel grounds, remembering death, cultivate, Having been born, they do not dwell there carelessly. By seeing various impure signs, The attachment to their body becomes thin. It is said that such a place is sufficient. Thus, abandoning attachment to external objects, that mind without attachment is called Mahāmudrā. If that attachment is not abandoned, even attachment to a subtle object will obstruct qualities. For example, even Āryadeva himself was obstructed from accomplishing a yakṣiṇī because of attachment to a clay ball. Even if one is obstructed by a single subtle object, by abandoning it, all temporary and ultimate qualities arise from it. Nowadays, it is like King Golden Color. The initial virtue was giving up the lives of all beings in Jambudvīpa, the intermediate virtue was becoming only Indra and a wheel-turning king, accomplishing all the benefits of oneself and others, and the final virtue was attaining unsurpassed enlightenment and becoming a Buddha, this very Śākya king. Attachment to external objects is to transform the place into a pure land. Attachment to internal sentient beings is attachment to men, women, boys, girls, horses, elephants, and so on. These must be abandoned. The bodhisattvas of the past also abandoned them. An example nowadays is that when Mahākāśyapa was born as a nyagrodha tree, even though he lived together with the good maiden of Śrāvastī, he did not even have a thought of desire for her, let alone engaging in impure conduct. Later, both of them attained arhatship, which also arose from a mind without attachment. A mind without attachment is Mahāmudrā. Thus, abandoning both attachment to external objects and attachment to internal sentient beings, when abiding in the samādhi of non-attachment, one gains control over all the attached worlds, including the gods, and becomes their teacher.
