If you think that the guru's teachings, turned into written records, etc., are wisdom, that is of no use. If you ask what is called wisdom, it is being skilled in the means of making one's own and other beings' minds, which are not abiding, abide; making the abiding stable; making the stable increase; preventing demons from entering; and being skilled in the means of dispelling them after they have entered, this is called wisdom. The master Āryadeva said that the master Nāgārjuna's method of making the bodhicitta, which is not abiding, abide, whatever he has become accustomed to from previous lives, and being able to guide, this is called wisdom. The master had him meditate on wood on his head, saying, "Child, come here, I will explain the scriptures, explain the tantras, transmit the pith instructions, explain the profound meaning of the great Brahmin," etc., no matter what he explained, he could not even obtain a slight abiding of the mind. Furthermore, if he tells a story of a mountain where a pratyekabuddha, a hermit, and a monkey live, then the hermit chief will not say, "Do as I say," but will say, "That monkey may have seen some great ascetics who have accomplished austerities, do the magic wheel that he taught," this is called wisdom. The monkey teaching the magic wheel, this is called wisdom. Furthermore, the Brahmin's child, the servant and the caretaker, Śāriputra gave them pith instructions, this is called wisdom. The reason why Śāriputra had great wisdom is because of this. Furthermore, Śāriputra shaved the cow dung mud, and therefore generated joy towards the noble one, and taught three phrases of Dharma, relying on that habit and attaining the arhatship, and said, "You generate joy towards me," therefore knowing that he would be born in the womb of the wife of a patron who has faith in the noble one, this is called wisdom. Furthermore, if one cultivates a subtle cause, knowing that one will obtain a perfect result, this is called wisdom. By making a small offering of a monk's robe and a duster, one obtains a pure Buddha-field. Knowing how to cultivate that cause is called wisdom. Because the road was narrow, he dusted for three months, removing dust and impurities, and manifested the śaikṣa arhat, this is called wisdom. Furthermore, being skilled in cultivating subtle and coarse causes and effects is called wisdom. When King Ngalé took birth from you to buy milk porridge, he offered five and a half grains of rice to the Tathāgata Vipashyin, and therefore obtained the four continents and the heavens. Finally becoming a Buddha, this is called wisdom.

Furthermore, it is called wisdom to know that giving alms with the mind of Bodhicitta will lead to the attainment of perfect Buddhahood. If one gives alms with the desire for the eight worldly dharmas of this life, or the desire for gods and humans in the next life, or with the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, that desire will be fulfilled, but it is not true wisdom. In general, there is no need to be extensive. One should understand all aspects by showing one aspect, as illustrated by the example of reeds and rushes. Thus, skillful means are distinguished by the conventional Bodhicitta, accumulating the accumulation of merit, and profound wisdom is skillful in the means of causing one's own and others' minds to abide in non-abiding. However, these are not external, but internal to one's own mind. From the beginning, one's own mind is unborn and one in emptiness. Thus, all dharmas included in samsara and nirvana are one's own mind. The mind is unborn from the beginning, like the center of the sky. It is said that one should keep this in mind, and that is the Dharma. Moreover, the precious Lama said: The perfectly complete Buddha, the Bhagavan, first generated the supreme Bodhicitta, then accumulated the accumulations of merit and wisdom for countless eons, and finally attained enlightenment in the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhi, and turned the three wheels of the Dharma. In summary, it is said that the root of white and pure virtue is gradually practiced in stages. That is, the beginning, middle, and end are all virtuous. It is also said: Virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end. The Buddhas of the past have said so. The Buddhas of the future will also say so. The perfectly enlightened Buddhas of the present also say so again and again. If one follows and practices the teachings of the Bhagavan, then virtue will arise in all three times, and all happiness and well-being for oneself and others will arise. All the Dharmas spoken by the Bhagavan are included in this virtue of the three times. There is nothing else, not even the tip of a hair. What is this? It is what the Bhagavan said: The Dharma of the liberation of the mind through detachment from desire, and the liberation of wisdom through wisdom.
