How does it manifest? It arises from the cause of generating the mind that desires the three enlightenments. Among them, Nirvana is one's own mind. How does samsara, one's own mind, manifest? The mind of afflictive desire manifests, and this mind creates attachment to the objects it uses, creating attachment, and the result of this karma is the emergence of the world of pretas. That was also explained in detail yesterday, illustrated with the example of the monkey. Similarly, the mind of hatred and the mind of ignorance, as well as karma and its result, are the same in that way. The world of hell and the world of animals arise, and the mind also appears there. The manifestation of Nirvana also relies on a virtuous friend, giving rise to the mind that desires the enlightenment of the Hearers. From this mind arises the result of the Hearer's enlightenment, the Arhat, and the mind that desires the enlightenment of the Solitary Realizer arises. That is also obtaining compassion for the inferior and the poor, a worthy object of offering in the world, like a rhinoceros horn, and obtaining the result of unsurpassed enlightenment from the mind that desires unsurpassed enlightenment. That is, these three minds, as they are, separately obtain the results of the three enlightenments, which is called Nirvana as one's own mind. That is, first generating these three minds, and then following this mind, accumulating the collections of merit and wisdom for three countless eons, from which the results arise separately, like the Bhagavan, Shariputra, and Maudgalyayana. Among them, the enlightenment of the Hearers and the enlightenment of the Solitary Realizers are inferior results. Because the means are narrow, it is not something to be practiced. One must generate the mind that desires unsurpassed enlightenment. Then, can Nirvana also be obtained from the mind of loving-kindness and compassion? It is not so. Because in the nature of the mind of loving-kindness and compassion, there is no thought of desiring the three enlightenments. If the mind of loving-kindness and compassion is not distinguished from the three minds of enlightenment, then this mind cannot obtain any of the three enlightenments. From this mind, samsara can also be accomplished, and the happiness of samsara will arise greatly, such as Va-

It is like a slave serving a king, or like the upright third stake of the outcasts. If you understand this Dharma, samsara is your own mind. Because you know the cause of arising, the basis of abiding, and the cause of destruction, you are skilled in the means of abandoning them. Nirvana is your own mind. Because you understand the cause of birth and the basis of abiding, etc., you are skilled in the means of accomplishing it. If you understand this Dharma, then all the Dharmas included in samsara and nirvana are understood by this. It is said that there are many Dharmas on the walls of scriptures, and those are also Dharma and views, which are the Dharmas of the scriptures, existing in books and pages. If you understand this, this is the root of the scriptures. Therefore, the nature of mind is understood as the great Sutra and commentary. If you rely on the written word, the yogi will be misled. That is, samsara is your own mind, which should be abandoned. The root of samsara is desire, so it must be abandoned. In this world, the difference between abandoning and not abandoning distinguishes happiness and suffering, like the captain of Sinhala and the merchants. Samsara is your own mind, and nirvana is also your own mind. That is, by the nature of the mind that has transmigrated and the nature of the momentary mind, one accomplishes the perfection of this world, and in the future, one obtains a perfect body, etc. All of this comes from understanding this Dharma, so you must practice it with great diligence. This is better than many profound Dharmas, so keep it in mind. Furthermore, the venerable Lama said: In general, all the Dharmas spoken by the Bhagavan Buddha, the perfectly enlightened one, are contained in the two forms of mantra and characteristics. In the characteristic Paramita Vehicle, the two vehicles of the Great Vehicle and the Small Vehicle are also spoken of. Desire is something that is imputed by the individual who is the basis. There is no distinction between the Great Vehicle and the Small Vehicle in the Vinaya Pitaka. Higher up is the glorious Guhyasamaja. If a Shravaka desires enlightenment and practices it, he will attain the enlightenment of a Shravaka. Similarly, if a Pratyekabuddha and unsurpassed enlightenment desire to practice it, they will also attain it. Lower down is the Karika, even if a Shravaka desires enlightenment and practices it, he will attain it. A Pratyekabuddha and unsurpassed enlightenment desiring to practice it will also attain it, therefore, the Vinaya Pitaka.
