arises. When love arises in someone's heart, compassion arises spontaneously. When compassion arises, the desire to be free from suffering arises. Because there is no other way to be free from all suffering except to become a fully enlightened Buddha, the aspiration to attain Buddhahood arises. As the Blessed Lord Maitreya said, "There is no cessation of sorrow except in the Buddha." And in the sutras it is said, "Greatly renowned, greatly wise, Great hero, greatly brave, One who has transcended the sorrow of existence, I prostrate to the one who has overcome the afflictions." If the aspiration to attain Buddhahood arises, one will engage in the cause of attaining Buddhahood, which is to enter the six perfections of the path. According to the Great Vehicle Secret Mantra, one will engage in the effort to practice the two stages of generation and completion. Therefore, all of these arise in an interconnected way. Therefore, the definitive cause for attaining perfect Buddhahood, the mind of enlightenment, should be generated through four aspects. As the venerable teacher Aryadeva said, "There are four conditions: the cause, the object, the immediate, and the dominant. There is no fifth condition." The causal condition is the innate compassion that beings have, even hawks and wolves have compassion. The dominant condition is that one should take the vow of generating the mind from a lama who possesses the mind of enlightenment and who cherishes others more than himself. As it is said in the Twenty Verses on the Bodhisattva Vow, "One should take it from a lama who abides in the vows, is skilled, and possesses ability." The objective condition is to continuously think that all sentient beings possess happiness, are free from suffering, and desire to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. As the teacher Inexhaustible Intellect said, "Even just the thought of benefiting others is superior to offering to the Buddhas, what need is there to mention striving for the happiness of unequaled sentient beings!" And as the teacher Vimalamitra said, "Even if the work of benefiting others has little power, one should always have that thought. Whoever has that thought in their mind, it will accomplish its purpose for them." If you think that such a mind of enlightenment is difficult to generate, it will arise through repeated familiarization. As the teacher Shantideva said, "If one is accustomed, it becomes easy."

Of transformation, no object whatsoever exists. Therefore, by becoming accustomed to small harms, one can endure great harms. Whatever unheard-of fears there are, without those, it will become displeasing. Thus it is said, so one should meditate again and again. From the Compendium of Trainings: Just as drops of water gradually fill a vase from beginning to end, so too, the initial mind does not attain the peace of enlightenment, and without it, one cannot even touch it. Thus it is said, and so on. The immediate cause of that is the arising of the thought of cherishing others more than oneself in the mindstream. Furthermore, if the mind of enlightenment is generated, in an instant, those who are bound in the prison of samsara and are suffering will be called the sons of the Sugatas, and the world, including gods and humans, will prostrate to them. Thus spoke the teacher Shantideva. And again, from his presence: Like the supreme form of gold-transforming elixir, having taken this impure body and transformed it into the body of the Victorious One, with a precious, immeasurable value, therefore, hold firmly to what is called the mind of enlightenment. Thus he said. Therefore, when the thought of cherishing others arises in the mindstream, it is called the immediate cause of that. Thus it is also said: The very nature of the mind that is equal to self and others, or after having cherished others more than oneself, what is the benefit of others, what is the benefit of oneself? Thus it is said. Therefore, in order to eliminate the errors of the path, by meditating on love, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, one must generate aversion to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, it is said. To this, Jowo Rinpoche gave the name "The Stages of the Path of a Great Being." The transformation of error into wisdom is that by meditating on all phenomena as emptiness, one generates aversion to all grasping at objects and characteristics. From the presence of the teacher Shantideva: By becoming accustomed to the habit of emptiness, one will abandon the habit of objects. Thus he said. What is the error in that? It is afflictions and conceptual thoughts. From the Sambhuta: Conceptual thought is great ignorance, it is the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara. If one abides in non-conceptual samadhi, then one will become like space, without doing anything. Thus it is said. From the presence of the great Brahmin: When the wind enters the water and stirs it, even the smooth water flows like the shape of a stone. Conceptual thought stirs
