Not being liberated from the suffering of suffering and the suffering of conditioning, one is always suffering. Among the six realms of beings, even the most powerful gods and humans experience such suffering. Samsara is like a burning house or a prison, like a pit of embers, like a pit of impurity. Therefore, all of samsara is of the nature of suffering. Thus, by contemplating the faults of samsara, knowing that all of samsara is suffering, fearing and disliking it, and desiring one's own peace and happiness, the thought arises that one must definitely escape from samsara. By practicing celibacy, one also attains the Arhat who is free from attachment to the desires of the three realms. To be free from craving and to have no rebirth is what that means. The discipline of renunciation is also what that means. The noble teacher said: If one is not disgusted with samsara, one will not attain Nirvana. Without the torment of suffering, beings will not develop weariness. Thus, in order to go on the path of Dharma, it is said that one must contemplate the faults of samsara and develop aversion to all of samsara. This is what the great Lord Atisha named the "Stages of the Path for a Person of Intermediate Capacity." Even having gone on the path of Dharma in this way, because one does not know which path to take, such as that of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, in order to eliminate the errors of the path, one must develop aversion to the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas with loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment. So, what is the error of the path? It is the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Because they fear the suffering of samsara, they desire to be alone in peace and happiness. By practicing celibacy, they attain the Stream-enterer fruit. Then, by exerting great effort, they attain the Arhat fruit, and so on. These Hearers and Solitary Buddhas must also realize emptiness in order to be liberated from samsara. The degree of realization of emptiness of the Hearers is equal to the fifth level of a Bodhisattva, and the Solitary Buddhas are equal to the sixth level of a Bodhisattva, as stated in the Sutra of the Ten Levels. Emptiness is Nirvana on the side of peace, abiding in a single body. The noble teacher said: These Hearers, until they are urged by the Buddhas, remain in a single body, intoxicated by the pride of the samadhi of wisdom.

Sa. Having been urged by various forms, one delights in diligently benefiting sentient beings. Through the increase of merit and wisdom, one will attain Buddhahood and enlightenment. Thus it is said. The two paths of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are deviations or obstacles on the path to unsurpassed enlightenment. As the teacher Asanga said in the Bodhisattvabhumi: "Dwelling in hell is not a permanent obstacle to enlightenment, but Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are permanent obstacles to enlightenment." Thus it is said. In order for them to attain Buddhahood, they must first generate the supreme Bodhicitta. As it is said in the Tantra: "Just as the protectors of the three times are certain in enlightenment, I shall generate the supreme Bodhicitta." Thus it is said. The Mother of the Buddhas, the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, says: "Without Bodhicitta, Buddhas will not appear in the world. If there are no Buddhas, there will be no well-spoken Dharma. If there is no well-spoken Dharma, there will be no good conduct. If there is no good conduct, there will be no higher realms such as Indra, nor definite goodness such as Shravakas." Thus it is said. The great Brahmin said: "Whoever engages in emptiness devoid of compassion will not find the supreme path." Thus it is said, in order to eliminate deviations on the path, one must cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, and Bodhicitta. That Bodhicitta arises from compassion, and compassion arises from loving-kindness. The Venerable Phagmo Drupa said: "May the river of loving-kindness never cease, may the root of compassion be thoroughly moistened, and may the tree of Bodhicitta grow luxuriantly, causing the fruit of the two benefits to ripen." Thus it is said. Loving-kindness is the wish for sentient beings to have happiness and its causes. Compassion is the wish for them to be free from suffering and its causes. Bodhicitta is the wish to attain perfect Buddhahood. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: "Having affection for sentient beings, having the intention of meeting and parting, having the thought of not separating, having the intention of benefiting, I prostrate to you." Thus it is said. The Ornament for Clear Realization says: "The generation of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment." Thus it is said. If one recognizes all sentient beings as one's mother, then loving-kindness arises.
